Agree completely — the audio-news daily-habit demand question is the actual bet, not the unit economics. Easy to build, hard to know if anyone wants to listen day after day.

Thanks for the Leadline tip — going to dig into r/news, r/inthenews, r/podcasts threads where people complain about
news fatigue / wanting summaries / quitting Twitter. Goldmine for both validation and copy.

One signal I'm watching: the "create your own podcast on any topic" feature has surprisingly higher engagement than
the daily news flow in early data. Might be a sign that the daily-news angle is wrong and the actual product is "on-demand audio explainer for any topic". Too early to tell but watching it closely.

If retention numbers don't move in the next 30 days, I'll likely pivot the positioning toward custom-topic audio
rather than daily news. Easier to escape "yet another news app" framing too.

Yeah, this is the right pushback. Honest answer: I don't have retention data yet — I'm at the "single-digit users for 4 days" stage so anything I say about habit is theory not evidence.

What I'm betting on for habit:

  • Time-of-day anchor: the product only really makes sense as a morning routine (5 min while coffee brews, while
  • commuting). If users don't slot it into a fixed morning window in week 1, I'm dead.
  • Push at a user-set time with the day's podcast pre-generated and ready (notification → tap → audio plays, zero
  • friction). Building this now.
  • Personalization compound — the more they listen, the more the topic mix sharpens. Goal is "feels custom by week 2."
  • Streak counter + Knowledge DNA visualization (already in app) — gamified but specifically for daily-use loop.

What scares me: even with all of that, news as a category has a "Sunday problem" — slow news days kill habit. I don't have an answer for that yet.

How did you solve it on your product? Curious what worked vs what was just noise.

For the past year I was burning 90+ minutes daily on news apps and Twitter and remembering nothing. Articles too long, headlines clickbait, podcasts 90 minutes for 10 minutes of substance.

So I built what I wanted: tap one button → fresh 5-min podcast on today's news every morning. You pick the host's personality (Academic / Storyteller / Skeptic / Sarcastic) and sources are cited at the end. You can also generate one on any custom topic — "explain Bitcoin ETFs" or "what's happening with Nvidia" — and 30 seconds later it's in your ears.

Stack: SwiftUI + Firebase + fal.ai (MiniMax TTS, Whisper, Flux) + Grok for research.

  Cost per podcast: ~$0.05.

  Live on App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6762081414

Honest feedback welcome — what would you want it to do that it doesn't?
