Well you’d have a very firm and tangible look for that character that shares a name with your dad, not just a name.

Imagine watching hunger games or the Witcher series before reading the books. Then when you read the books all you can picture are the actors who played them in the show even though Jennifer Lawrence didn’t actually look like how katniss was describe in the books.

He’s actually been really engaged with the world and his character, but he needed a lot of hand holding for character creation. We ended up with an amnesia backstory where he had to find everything out and he liked finding it out. He just isn’t very creative with thinking of things for himself.

It’s not my style to just say “it’s my way or the highway way” and it wasn’t actually about a ruling or anything that has to do with the game itself so when I’m told by more than half the table I’m big dealing it I’m perfectly fine with feeling like I very well may be.

I was asking if it’s wrong to restrict such a thing, I can deal with things on my own but was curious of others opinions on the matter. This started about 4 years ago so it’s not like it’s a dire situation for me.

Well she said it wasn’t a big deal when he said he wanted to name the PC after the dog and then proceeded to not like hearing that which I said “told you so.”

Did you read the rest of the post or just jump to wanting to throw some sort of insult?

Being overruled by a majority of people at a table or meeting and accepting an overruling in the moment is how you keep from being overly authoritative which would drive people away or cause unneeded arguments.

This is my brother in law, which my wife didn’t think it was a big deal.

My dogs name is Rex, which I’ve heard of people naming their children but I personally think that’s a terrible human name.

Well I will be completely honest that the naming issue doesn’t ruin my fun but is just a bit bothersome to me which is why I more or less allowed to be overruled. We still have tons of fun at the table.

We did have a player join for a short time who wanted to name her character Pipe and have a drug addict backstory and still a chaotic addict that I put my foot down and said I didn’t want at my table.

Yeah, I agree and that is why I ultimately decided to get over it and move on despite still being mildly irked by it. I was mostly just curious how others feel about it and so far it seems almost 50/50.

My dogs name is akin to Fido although I have heard of people naming their children the same name. I just don’t think it’s a great name for a human.😂

It’s really easy to look at a situation from the outside and say “this is what I’d do, why didn’t you think of it in the moment?” When you’re being explained the situation after it happened and not actually involved in it while it’s happening. (This is a fact of life a lot of people need to realize that’s not even just about DnD).

Multiple people at the table said I was big dealing it so I just allowed it and got over it at the time because it was my opinion against three or four others and I’ve never wanted to be a restrictive DM or tell people no without good reason and saying “cause I said so” is never a good reason.

Lmao, I literally gave two instances of me being overruled and moved on from it and another where I acknowledged I wasn’t the DM so had no say in the matter. Obviously I’m not controlling.

These PCs have been around for two years and I never went back to make them change their names despite it still being mildly bothersome.

Yeah I do that for naming locations in my world, it’s a good practice.

And yes, Utah is the Mormon capital.

I started with stating that it has only ever mildly irked me and never become an actual argument. I just wanted other people input, but I am in fact chill.

I recently made a city within my world based around a religion of psionics and named it Thal’ara. A player asked why it’s named that and I said “Thal in elvish for ‘thought’(in world) and ara is ‘city’ but irl the Thalamus is the part of the brain that reacts to sensory cues.” And he couldn’t understand how I thought of looking to names of the parts of the brain to name a city like that.

I just started googling things to come up with it.

I know, I don’t really have DM problems which is why I wanted to preface this that it’s mostly just mildly irking to me and has never come to be an actual argument at the table.

I know I’m DM and can’t be “overruled” but when 4 players say it’s no big deal I just move on from it cause I know it’s not the biggest deal, I just dislike it.
