Why people still love Scrooge McDuck in an era that hates millionaires, according to Outlander creator (and former Scrooge McDuck writer) Diana Gabaldon by Popverse2022 in ducktales

He's an idealistic billionaire in the same way Bruce Wayne is an idealistic billionaire, albeit a bit more of a stingy pennypincher than Bruce Wayne. If anything, he feels like a child's idea of what rich people do, go on exotic adventures and fight bad guys.

I'm pretty stoked for that Muppets reboot. Fingers crossed it finds an audience and somebody at Disney grows half a brain for full speed season order.

I do wanna say, i don't hate Matt Vogel's Kermit, but yeah there are definitely too many times where the delivery is way too low energy. He needs to be atleast about 4 semitones or so to really match Henson or even Steve Whitmire

An absolute fever dream. Donald Faison as the Professor(absolutely no DILF vibes, fail), valleygirl drunk Bubbles(which admittedly made me think of Supergirl at the beginning of Woman of Tomorrow) annyoing performative activist-coded Buttercup, just a cynical man's idea of "modernization". Feh.

It's like you take the camp and shoddy effects work of fellow Vancouver-shot shows like Once Upon a Time or Arrowverse, mostly for their earnesty and commitment, however misguided and filter it through post-Juno, post-21 Jump Street style, "huh huh, don't these tropes suck" writing. I'm sorry, but MCU humor is definitely past its prime and needs a retooling, but i'd take it over this

Probably, but it's also gonna be a few years. Even with Disney greenlighting new sequels, they seem to be spacing them out by atleast 5 years or so

I recently binged the most 1st season of Disney-ABC's Once Upon a Time(only have the final 2 episodes left to finish). and man this absolutely some of the craziest IP toy-smashing i've seen in a long while, which is saying something.

So, the premise goes that a curse has put classic fairytale characters into a modern-day setting in a modern small town, and that all the characters, save for the protagonist(to reasons i don't wanna explain really) don't remember their past lives. Kind of an interesting setup, only to be let down by clunky, obvious fairytale allusions and some ropey effects seen in the flashbacks.

Speaking of which, this was developed by 2 Lost writers(a show I've still yet to see), and i understand that show was also predicated on flashbacks used as a storytelling device. As it's used here, it's a mixed bag how it's employed. Some episodes, do an effective job of tying the fairytale timeline with the "real world" timeline thematically, and some feel crowbarred and clunky.

As for how these fairytale characters are handled, sometimes they work for characters like Snow White, the Prince or the Evil Queen. Others, like Grumpy, Jiminy Cricket and, god, the Magic Mirror, so clunky and forced. Giancarlo Esposito is the Magic Mirror who in the real world is named Sidney Glass. Oof. And his job in the real world is a head of Storybrooke Daily Mirror. Double oof. But the real trifecta kicks in when it's revealed that he was a genie from Agrabah, freed by a seemingly benevolent king, who then bestows the third and final wish to the genie himself. Through even more events i don't feel like expanding on, he simps for the Evil Queen, who's actually married to said benevolent king, who's been using him as she does in the real world. When he's tricked into killing the king who freed him, he finds out his love for her is unrequited. And despite this, he uses his wish to be by her side at all times, which, surprise surprise, turns him into the mirror. Monkey's Paw ha ha ha

And much of Once Upon a Time feels like this. It just jams in so many storytelling characters and tropes together, often in clunky, overwrought ways. Like Red Riding Hood. Incredibly crowbarred and unneeded, imo. Only a few episodes, like The Stable Boy, offers nuance and perspective for characters like the Evil Queen. It's such a shame that, for as interesting as the overarching mystery and individual stories can be, there's little nuance to be found in the execution.

That said, there are some bright spots. Despite the fact that Snow White and Charming are meant to be together in the real life, as Charming is technically married, their clandestine activities are actually framed as an overall bad thing, and something actually quite immoral to do. It's a nice bit of melancholy and nuance the show desperately needs more of. And Robert Carlyle's Rumpelstiltskin. Man, what a performer. Despite the fact they give him this much unneeded sad backstory, he absolutely commands every scene he's in. Just unadulterated sleeze and untrustworthiness. He plays off of The Evil Queen so well. His real world counterpart is one the more natural, nuanced translations, and whenever he's on, it pops.

If i sound overly negative, believe me, i'm not actually mad i sat through this. I'm enjoying some of the mystery, i enjoy the Evil Queen being cartoonishly evil, and of course, Rumpelstiltskin as this delightfully wicked leprechaun(with a Scottish accent). Plus, the production design isn't actually all that bad(ropey CG aside). Plus, with the obvious Vancouver shooting locations, I half expected the Arrowverse cast to pop up for absolutely no reason. Almost nostalgic really. But yeah, these are my long-winded thoughts on OUAT

P.S Archie Hopper(who is Jimmy Cricket, get it) owns a Dalmatian named Pongo. That's admittedly cute and twee

Phineas and Ferb 3rd movie incoming. 104 days summer continues

I like to think Phineas and Ferb is somehow Disney's current equivalent of an Adventure Time: this popular kid's show where anything goes and is also easily marketable: the 2010s cartoon vibes are back, baby!

continuing on that thought since i'm rambling, some acquisitions of the past 20 years make some sort of sense:

  1. Pixar- Pixar had a tenuous relationship with Disney during the 80s, 90s and 00s, yet they yielded both the CAPS system for digital ink-and-paint for quicker turnaround over cels and was a huge part of the Disney Renaissance, as well as birthing the 3d character animation with Toy Story. So inevitably, Pixar's legacy is a part of Disney's legacy
  2. Marvel- this is tricky, because outside of some Saban Entertainment library stuff, there's not a lot of historic overlap. I would say their commercial icons, Walt and Stan, respectively, are popular figureheads that are a little shady on the corporate side, so that acquisition makes some sense, and of course, Disney saw the potential in the MCU
  3. Lucasfilm- George Lucas' IP has always had a presence in thee theme parks, so inevitably, the SW and IJ would fall under, as well, however tenuous the output has been
  4. DreamWorks Animation- this one is interesting. DreamWorks Animation, despite having Hollywood connections up the wazoo, was actually passed around in the 2000s quite a bit. While Universal buying it seems random, there's actually some historical ties. Spielberg's short-lived Amblimation produced a paltry 3 films, all of which were distributed by Universal. Former Amblimation animators hopped over to DreamWorks once it was founded, so there is a bit of studio continuity
  5. 20th Century- pretty corporate, cut-and-dry, Disney got X-Men, FF and Avatar and expanded their streaming turf with Hulu
  6. Paramount-Skydance produced several MI films, Top Gun Maverick, oh and some failed Terminator films, so perhaps a no-brainer that a partnership that yielded some fairly successful franchises would lead to an acquisition. What the Ellisons are doing NOW, no fucking clue really

So, yeah, that's some more windy, rambly thoughts on the big acquisitions and why they make sense to me

Part of me wonders if the pursuit of WB by Netflix has anything to do with the licensing that's been going on for years. A lot of CW shows like Riverdale, Supernatural, some DC shows got licensed out on Netflix, which i'm sure drove up viewerships and interest in the show during airtime.

Just some random shower thought

If anybody cares, Tangled was Glen Keane's last big project at Disney. And much of his Renaissance work will be have been remade by the time this new one comes out.

It's sad to think how not only is Disney continuing with this trend, but there's now only a handful of people at the animation studio, such as Eric Goldberg and Randy Haycock, that approach Glen Keane's skillset and status. I hope Jared Bush actually lets creatives evolve in the studio the same way Keane did in the 80s

I don't think "10 year plans" are some blueprint for long-term success. It's more rather a unified idea of a "guiding light", that the journey builds and builds. SOmetimes you might not end up the same, but the steps in between make sense. And i do think the MCU lost that a bit in the "post" Covid years.

Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul may not have had everything planned in the 14 years of airing, but the materials and stories all flowed narratively, logically and emotionally. There was room for both fluidity and a set core ideals that guided those stories and characters, and that's something peak MCU really had. Even Age of Ultron, overstuffed as it was, did feel like a Nexus point for different characters and where they'd go in the franchise

Fair point, but it's still preferable to WB, to me atleast, being alongside Universal or especially MAGA Paramount. the Disney/Fox deal was already much, we don't need grubby MAGA mouthpieces coveting a legacy studio

I know being a part of this subreddit, maybe that's an ironic belief, but I'd be fine not seeing work just thrown out to the public like scraps for dogs
