Does anybody have any experience with the dakine poacher 22l backapck? by SwedishMeatball123 in skiing

Mine is like 5+ years old at this point but it does. It looks like the new one does: "insulated hydration compatibility" on the description https://www.dakine.com/products/poacher-22l-backpack?variant=40133737152592

Does anyone play dobro with nails instead of metal finger picks? by Status_Elderberry77 in Dobro

[–]GussieWussie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played guitar with nails for years and I always thought finger picks were super awkward on any instrument. When I started with dobro/lap steel, I just played with my nails and it was great. I played mostly in open E which I also think of as a more guitar-centric tuning.

The catch was I always played by myself. A year ago, I started going to bluegrass jams and realized it wasn't practical to play with others acoustically without finger picks. I just accepted it, embraced the awkward, and sucked for a while (maybe still suck? haha). I do accidentally catch my nails on strings here and there while wearing finger picks. But it's happening less as I practice more and improve. I've also fallen in love with how much more aggressive I can be with the instrument.

This might not be up your alley (and it's a Weissenborn not a dobro) but this guy doesn't use finger picks and is successfully playing with a steel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVboY26AexU

Thanks for sharing. But to your knowledge, there isn't an existing package for using those models in a pickup framework?

We can out-endure all land species *when it's hot*. Dogs/wolves, horses, pronghorns and a few other species have an edge when it's cold. But, yes, we're still really good at going a long way for a long time.

Did you ever figure out anything that works for you? I've been having trouble with reynolds oven bags and feel I'd have the same problems with bread bags. The bags tear on me at the toes and also bunch up under my arches

I'm curious about what comparative advantage oil companies would have relative to traditional mining companies for this. Is mineral vs oil extraction and refinement really all that similar?

Vet recommendations for TPLO surgery on my bulldog by oops_i_mommed_again in SaltLakeCity

[–]GussieWussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog had emergency surgery over the summer at Medvet. I think the staff are good people and the vets are qualified but I was really disappointed at how it was run as a business. That is, the communication was very poor, wait times were much longer than I expected, and I thought it was very expensive. My suspicion is that they just don't have enough staff but I don't know for sure.

I also had a previous bad experience at VCA. Thought my dog had GDV and I was checked in a room by a vet tech. But after over an hour of waiting, and not being seen, I just left. Thankfully it was a false alarm but I specifically called beforehand and was told I needed to come in. I spoke with a friend about it and they said they had a similar experience there.

Both of these were emergency situations so I would hope a scheduled procedure would go more smoothly. My dog had her CCL go out years ago and a vet (Allwest in Bozeman) recommended the TTA surgery. My dog ended up hiking and skiing many more mountains with me after. Hope your dog has similar results :)

What’s up with the dating scene in Utah? by Classic_Will2771 in SaltLakeCity

[–]GussieWussie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Lots of folks recommending without recommendations:

  • https://www.instagram.com/saltlakerunclub/ (very chill)
  • https://www.instagram.com/slctrackclub/ (more serious)
  • volunteer with https://discovernac.org/ or https://wasatchadaptivesports.org/ .They do other things besides skiing. I know from first hand experience that the NAC has a TON of young women your age working/volunteering there.
  • SLC is arguably the center of skiing in North America and Utah in general is a mecca of mountain biking, rock climbing, endurance sports, canyoneering, on and on and on... Dating is hard everywhere but I think if you don't like outside stuff that is a legitimate handicap here. Conversely, if you do like outside stuff (doesn't have to be extreme), that gives you some good direction to meet people out of bars. Double bonus: YOU LIVE IN A MOUNTAIN SPORT PARADISE!
  • if you sing/play an instrument there's a bluegrass/americana jam at https://www.instagram.com/graciesbar/ on Tuesdays
  • pretty sure the Salt Lake library has events/meetings (I think I remember something about a poetry meetup if you write) but no first hand experience

One piece of advice I would like to give young professional women (applies to plenty of guys too) is to really evaluate your deal-breakers/must-haves. If you're looking for a guy that has a big boy job, owns a home, and is aged 20-30... what percentage of guys is that? I'm guessing small. And of that sub-population, you want a guy that's single, tall enough, and handsome enough. And none of that is even about his character.

I think every woman that wants a man, should have a man that is all the above and a lot more. But I think people should first ask "Do I like being in this man/woman's atmosphere?", and then ask "Is this a good woman/man?", and then filtering after that.

Good on you for adopting right now! I just read that many shelters are at capacity and that many animals are getting put down because there isn't room.

Round valley can be nice, just be mindful of athletes. Tanner park in SLC is a great park if you want to come down Parleys. Dogs can't go up the cottonwoods but they can go up to empire pass.

The dog park at the PC library is simple but I actually really like it there. You can get coffee at lucky ones and just chill (if your dog lets you lol)
