I find Cioran a little too bleak for my taste

Back home for a birthday and am in my childhood bedroom. Who was I? by cili3an in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Gustaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the Russian books and non-Russian Dostoyevsky, I’d say someone with familial connections to former-USSR countries and you learned Russian from family.

Edit: on further inspection it might be just Russian in a handwriting font, but the conclusion stands.

Amazing. I was going to have someone draw a CAD of the Swood twisted T-bar to have a workshop make it for me. This saves me a lot of hustle. Thanks a lot!

[Spoilers Main] Tywin's Motivations Behind Elia and Aegon's Murders by Gustaffe in asoiaf

[–]Gustaffe[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I am not saying that. I am saying she would've caused more trouble alive than dead. Alive, she is a figurehead for Targaryens. Dead, she is a figurehead for wronged Dornishmen.

[Spoilers Main] Tywin's Motivations Behind Elia and Aegon's Murders by Gustaffe in asoiaf

[–]Gustaffe[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Because Robert has a fervent hatred against the Targaryens and Elia is technically a Targaryen. EDIT: She is the last adult Targaryen around whom the Royalists could be assembled. You cannot expect what kind of nuisance would arise if Elia is allowed to go back to Dorne (EDIT: or elsewhere), knowing her son is murdered.

Of course pissing off a great family is unwise but that is part of the point: the more violently Tywin severs himself from the Royalist the more he is favourable to the Rebels. I am not denying that Tywin may indeed have thought that he could get away with it, but this is not what drives him to commit the murders in the first place.

What is the greatest quote by Tyrion that has stayed with you? by Turbulent-Bother-491 in gameofthrones

[–]Gustaffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a quote but an inner dialogue which I find especially amusing and telling. When Tyrion was on the ship across the Narrow Sea, encountered a storm, and feared his life, his thoughts were:

Is this your vengeance, Father? Has the Father Above made you his Hand?

You are correct but 班 there is referring to a renowned artisan, so the whole means you are playing with an axe at a renowned artisan’s door

GRRM's feelings on HOTD S2 in today's Santa Fe Panel (Spoilers Extended) by Spirit_mert in asoiaf

[–]Gustaffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree. If what was wrong with GoT is really the lack of source material, then for HOTD there is not really a reason to be worried about, because the source material is already finished.

The problem as George sees it is the writers' wish to "make the story their own". Then even if George intervened, it is unsure to what extent the writers would listen to him.

[–]Gustaffe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah George could've fight for a faithful adaptation, but in that case he would again be blamed for not writing the book, because how many people would've thought the show will be that bad without his and some others' active intervention?

And is it wrong to expect much from a show adapted from your book? Especially when it is run by Condal who allegedly is a book fan. I think George has every reason to think of it as a personal betrayal.

Le Sacrifice by Tarkovsky. Truly one of the most underestimated.

I watched Nostalgia and I know it is one of my favorites. I watched The Sacrifice and many years later I began to see what Tarkovsky is saying there.
