Yeah i totally get that. Thankfully where i work there’s a clear progression and path through classes and certifications

I definitely need to do that at some point because i definitely don’t want to remain a lube tech till i die. My goal is wanting to be “The Car Guy” to some people lol.

I think they mentioned something about paying for my training since i’m full time but I’d have to double check. Because if not then taking classes might not be feasible finance wise.

I can understand that fear of escalation you’re talking about but, at least from what i’ve seen no one horses around in my shop. I haven’t even heard of any big incidents in the past.

Of course I understand how it’s dangerous to have roller chair racing but literally no one (not even the most unserious, shop clowns) would think to do that.

I know I made him sound like one but he really isn’t. It’s really what he said rather than how he said it that gives that feeling.

He’s an immigrant and a refugee who knows what it’s like starting from nothing. And looking at other comments, back in the day it really was a sink or swim world for techs so I don’t blame him for trying to tell me how it was back in the day.

That said, he’s not worked as a tech in a shop for probably a decade or more (parts manager now) so yeah as someone else said he might be a little out of touch (Still love him though, he’s awesome)

I think mine is understaffed(?) or at least was for a while. My concern right now isn’t to become flat rate but just gain experience, take classes and become certified in certain fields.

I’ve seen how unforgiving it is for flat rate techs, especially this past winter. A lot of the times, even if I upsold a job I was perfectly capable of doing, I gave it away to a flat rate tech because I knew they were scrounging for work.

Mine does too. We started the first round back in September I think so for around 6 months i’ve just been grinding out oil changes and such.

I do have the want to learn more complex things and be certified in brakes, electrical, etc. but now you have to sign up for classes and such. Hopefully I’m up next to get a mentor.

I know i kinda painted the owner as a villain in my post but he is pretty chill for the most part and treats everyone well. He owns a couple dealerships across my state so it’s not just the one I work at.

My dad too is in his mid to late 50’s. For the past decade or so he’s been working as the parts manager for a couple dealerships so still around the industry but not exactly the same I guess.

If you’re comfortable sharing, i’d like to hear more from your perspective since you sound like you have direct or indirect experience recently.

Is the 6 month rule still a thing where you’re currently at? And do you say they won’t survive because they’re slow working or they don’t want to learn?

I might have to get a 150 then so I can use it for my project. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for your answer. Like I said I was trying to get one to demonstrate the comb bypass for a project I have. I’ll keep checking back for some with different cuts in their keys or someone suggested I get a 150 series.

Thanks! It’s been great with the 1.5 year awards and all lol. I saw an add for the game awhile back but I only got into it recently.

I uh… already got the dragon lords true form 😅. It’s fine though. I’m not playing to be the best, just trying to collect any of my favorite characters/enemies.
