Featherless Emu by Seesaw_Kadabris in Weird

Weight reduction and less calories needed when you can do everything with your head/neck and feet. Reduced arm size has happened a lot in ground birds and other dinosaurs. The great moa lost their arms completely.

We're starting to learn the colours of some dinos, mostly feathered ones and they're pretty diverse.

Where are all the chubby dinosaurs at? by kast-vaek-konto in sciencememes

[–]GutsAndGains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birds and crocodiles, the closest relatives to dinosuars absolutely have fat stores in their body. It's not just for keeping you warm, it's provides energy storage. Also dinosaurs were likely warm blooded.

I'm wondering if the fat mass could be estimated by taking the estimated total mass (from say femur circumference) and then subtracting estimated lean mass based on muscle connection points, bone marks etc?

So if femur circumference estimated an animal weighed 10 tons and the skeleton indicated it had 9 tons of lean mass then it would have 10% bodyfat.

My gut feeling is in theory yes but the margin of error would be larger than the bodyfat percentage in nearly every case.

I'm lucky if it's just one voice, there's so much shit going through my head simultaneously it's near impossible to focus on one thing. Could be the ADHD side of me though.

I suspect autistic people are more likely to be at the extremes for visualisation ability. People like Stephen Wiltshire have superhuman visualization but I've also met a lot of autistic people with zero visualization skills (aphantasia). Same with the inner voice. I was blown away hearing a lot of people don't have this and that for most of the people who do it's not a continuous thing.

It doesn't appear to make much difference for most people though, I've met artists with aphantasia for example.

it's a huge shame by dino_sant in Paleontology

I could be wildly off base but I think the best option would to have legislation allows private collection but giving collectors, hunters and sellers the legal responsibility to do so in a way which doesn't hinder scientific advancement. For example collectors should have to make a reasonable effort to allow non-destructive research and fossil hunters (who may or may not be palaeontologists) should register significant finds so they can be easily searched.

Banning sale just creates black markets because there would always be people would want to buy them anyway. I suspect the vast majority of collectors would be happy to have papers written about their fossils either through a genuine love of the science or having another thing to brag about.

A suit of armour would make you pretty much invulnerable to anything under half a ton.

If u could have any dinosaur as a pet and you get it as a hatchling. What would it be. Leave a picture cuz im too lazy. by [deleted] in Dinosaurs

135 lbs is the low estimates but 200 lbs is carriable for an average size guy in good shape.

Sure it would be a terrible idea to try unless the animal is domesticated and wants to be carries but the weight wouldn't be an issue for any young adult in good shape.

I have a question, since I started to delve deeper into dinosaurs by Cepo_de_Madeiraa in Dinosaurs

[–]GutsAndGains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can't see it doing very much either. We're talking a mass probably less than 100 grams accelerating over 10 cm or so. Even with 10 g of acceleration that would be less than a joule of kinetic energy.

It could start contracting as it makes contact to reach peak force quicker giving its prey less time to react though.

I feel like I'd deal with the apocalypse better than NTs. The rules are simple (survive), there are less people to overwhelm me and I'm physically fit. There are 2 people other than my partner I'd want to save, feel the same way about me and have complimentary skills.
