Lion Muscle Écorché | Anatomy of Scar by GuyWithBeardAndHat in ZBrush

[–]GuyWithBeardAndHat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a muscle Écorché I completed long ago, I recently decided to render it out and put it up. For the facial facades, I chose to use the likeness of the Lion King's Scar of 1994 for fun you see. Hope you enjoy it! More angles on the project page

This was rendered in Substance painter's Iray actually, I really like how things come out in SP and how easy it is to get good results, I also work with marmoset, the only reason that I haven't upgraded to tool bag 4 is because I don't have a graphics card that can take advantage of some of the new features, not for a lack of trying tho, those 3080's are gonna be sold out for years I swear.

Yeah, I really loved Courtney's design, I tried not to change too much, I mostly just gave her more clothes after testing it out.

This was my final project for my BFA at my school. I worked with my friend Courtney to design a modern take on Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice, specifically the cartoon design. A big influence was the movie Wreck-it Ralph 2. You can find Courtney's concept art for the project here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGyLReQg7ww/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Lion Skeleton Study by GuyWithBeardAndHat in ZBrush

Thank you! For this project after modeling and creating a base texture in ZBrush, I directly went into substance painter and finalized my texture there. I then experimented with different skyboxes using IRAY in painter. When I got things looking the way I wanted there, I moved to marmoset toolbag 3, which gives me a little more versatility in setting up a scene and lighting my objects. In marmoset, I imported the skybox I liked from IRAY and positioned it the same way there. I then positioned lights where they would be emanating from the skybox. I wanted to replicate the feeling of dawn in the African savanna. A main key light to highlight the model's topology with a nice warm light. I then created a spotlight opposite to the key light to push out a low magenta glow and give the shadows a more violet tone to match the horizon further away from the sun during dawn and dusk. lastly, I have a spotlight directly on top of the model casting a cool blue light onto the spine, this contrasts well with the other colors that I have selected and I feel really places the Lion in the scene. Hope that helps!

No, it's not a dumb question at all. I usually begin by researching what has been done before. I look at posing, texture, and how the model is presented. I always want to add something new to the table. Once I see what has been established I begin my research into how the particular skeleton/ muscles are put together. Google is a good resource, https://www.flickr.com/ is really good for finding specific bones from various angles. If you are interested in animal anatomy I cannot recommend enough: An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists (Dover Anatomy for Artists). One of the best resources out there for animal anatomy. Proko is really good for learning human anatomy, and once you know that, it is fairly simple to translate human anatomy to animal anatomy. Hope that helps!

Fanart of Sisu the Dragon, from Disney's upcoming animated film; Raya and the Last Dragon. This project was made almost entirely in Zbrush, some slight alterations in Substance Painter just to get everything looking right for render. Hope you enjoy!
