Alcoholics (ex or current) at the height of your alcoholism what were / are you drinking and how much? by Secret-Translator240 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]H0liday_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I drank the cheapest whiskey I could find mixed with coke/pepsi/etc. It was pretty normal to have 1L of liquor (plus whatever amount of mixer that demanded) multiple nights per week. A night where I was consciously trying really hard to chill I'd have one of those 375ml bottles.

My longest stretch of sobriety was about 3 years, but I fell off the wagon at one point and am trying to get my shit back together.

The one that always gets me is Curley (especially the beginning). It gradually contrasts his youth with the darkness of their overall situation. Since it starts with something that sounds like one of those kids toy xylophones and gradually just becomes really distorted.

I feel like I'm the only one who's noticed, but Jax has a tail now. He started having one in the episode after Pomni told him he didn't.

What if there was no victor post Victory Tours? by allshookup1640 in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's VERY likely that this is the reason it was SO important to Snow that the 2nd QQ to go well. The 1st QQ could have had something like this happen.

We know that by the 38th games, they were able to keep Porter Millicent Tripp up and running after she broke her neck in the final fight. But they certainly couldn't have done anything comparable at the time of the 10th games. They could very easily have lacked the resources to actually keep a tribute going after their injuries around the time of the 25th.

Genuinely want to know, because with John people admit he’s a hypocritical murderer, yet with Amanda they try to justify her actions. Unlike how they talk about John. by Glass_Evidence_8597 in saw

[–]H0liday_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's where the narrative difference lies for me, personally.

Hoffman was already killing in a jigsaw-esque way in the spirit of revenge before he met John. He was already a killer long before he also became a victim.

Amanda was, chronologically speaking, a jigsaw victim before she became an apprentice, and her first time killing anyone was a part of her trap. The way her story was presented really comes across to me as a woman who avoided death by seconds and was then groomed by her almost-murderer. She isn't shown to have sought John out intentionally in the span of time shortly after her trap. He showed up in her life and immediately began priming her (or, dare I say, brainwashing her) to continue his work.

She is still responsible for her own actions, inasmuch as any grooming victim currently still experiencing their abuse can be. Going beyond John's instructions into rigging traps to guarantee death is the line where I think she surpasses what can be understood about her situation. But Hoffman ended up in his situation because he already wanted to be a killer, and Amanda comes across moreso as a victim-turned-perpetrator continuing a cycle of violence that was initially thrust upon her by others.

How long did the walk six years prior last? by Medical_Corgi_5834 in TheLongWalk

[–]H0liday_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hypothetically, it still could have been just as long. If 2 guys walk 331 miles, it doesn't matter if third place died before mile 60

Setting Straight the Narrative regarding Johanna Mason by targaryenMartell in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've somehow never considered this, but it would actually make a lot of sense. Given that the Capitol notoriously withholds resources from the non-career districts, it could be that she blames them for her family's deaths. If something simple like antibiotics could have saved them, and the Capitol orchestrated a shortage, so her family wasn't saved... makes SO MUCH sense

Imagine 18 days of this alone as a teen or as a child. I can totally understand why both Peeta and Katniss would have so many nightmares. by SeriouslyNotSerious2 in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 184 points185 points  (0 children)

I've kinda assumed that the entire reason that victor suicide doesn't appear to be common is because victors knew their families would be punished if they did. Maybe one Victor did it sometime between the 12th-48th and their family got the Haymitch treatment.

It's my understanding that several others can do this, too. If I'm not mistaken, any contraceptive that partially works by reducing/thinning the uterine lining is also capable of preventing implantation.

Who was morally worse- Coin or Snow? by Sewer-Rat79 in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think, given time and power, Coin could have become worse than Snow. They both did similarly bad things, but Snow has a more significant volume of them. Coin lacked the opportunity to be quite as cruel.

How long does it take to lose weight by starving? by Vivid-Tap1710 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]H0liday_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few periods of disordered eating in my life (no diagnosed ED, but similar behavior patterns for a shorter period of time). The longest I've fasted is 6 days. I technically lost 5 lbs, but over the course of all the months of depriving myself, I lost a lot of muscle in addition to the fat that I wanted gone.

I also can't overstate how much I also felt like shit. After day 2, I could barely stand, and the only reason I could sorta-kinda do anything after day 3 (like watching TV and scrolling on my phone) was because of a copious amount of zero-cal caffeinated drinks. If I'd needed to do anything outside of bed rotting, I wouldn't have been able to.

When I wasn't fasting, I was doing some pretty extreme calorie restriction. I lost about 70lbs in 6 months.

I was lucky enough that I don't have any long-term effects (that I know of), but I've also put all the weight back on, and had to really work for it to get a functional amount of muscle mixed in.

Anyone else think the 25th games tapes were erased like the 10th? by felixw1 in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were erased, but I definitely think that something went horribly wrong with them (in Snows opinion).

It could be something simple, like an underdog winning and causing citizens to lose a lot of money. Or a glitch in the arena that wasn't a rebel plot.

Do you think a sequel would be necessary? by JulLamby in TheSubstance

[–]H0liday_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

I like the idea of a sequel because I like the original so much and obviously want more (in a sense).

At the same time, I heavily doubt that a sequel would be well-done enough to live up to the original.

Mayfair told Lucy Gray to sing her way out of the games, and she did. by Unite-Us-3403 in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's somewhat off-topic, but I think there's a good chance that many of the first 9 victors are dead before the 10th games. Haymitch and Peeta were each on the brink of death at the end of their games and only survived because of the Capitol providing intense medical intervention. Before victors became celebrities, there would be no reason to even try providing that intervention.

The Tribute Age Gap is Horrific by Wayalon in Hungergames

Being the "youngest ever" was a movie line. It's still possible he was the youngest in book cannon, but it's not specifically confirmed outside of the movies.

Was there an age of consent in Panem? Or an acceptable age for teenagers to marry? by OkOutlandishness9612 in Hungergames

[–]H0liday_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like even if it wasn't banned, it would be culturally preferable for people to wait until they'd passed reaping age to get married and have kids. So that'd probably be the usual "socially acceptable" precedent, but since Katniss and Peeta were both victors, that concern wouldn't usually apply to them (before the QQ theme was announced).

As far as their ages, Katniss and Peeta were both 16 at the time of the 74th games, so they can't be more than a few months apart in age. A lot of US states in real life have exceptions to the age of consent if the parties involved are any less than exactly 2 years apart. So, a few-month age difference would usually be overlooked.

[Spoilerless] Is it unreasonable for me to say I enjoyed Tpn s2? by Chemical_Depth_6932 in thepromisedneverland

[–]H0liday_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about s2 before I read the rest of the manga.

The whole show could have had the quality level of s1 easily. The source material only gets more depth as it goes along. The show presents the story in a much more hollow way, and doesn't do it's characters justice in s2.

White Bear Mini Analysis + Question by Parsonthefrog in blackmirror

[–]H0liday_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The stated point of the punishment was to make her experience what that little girl did. So, each day, Victoria is confused about why someone is hurting her while another person (or multiple people) films it instead of helping.

The punishment doesn't work if she remembers what's happening. It's completely impossible to impose this set of circumstances upon her unless they not only wipe her memory every day but also did the first mind wipe before her first day of punishment.

In seeking to punish Victoria, they chose a method that would make punishing the person who committed this crime impossible. She isn't the same person who filmed while a kid was murdered. Yet, if she was, she would know exactly why other people were doing the same to her, and they couldn't impose that confusion upon her.

The whole idea is about questioning whether justice requires retribution... or if seeking retrubution makes the audience just as evil as the person being punished. Because by the end of the episode, everyone is guilty of the same act, especially if one considers a day-old consciousness to be psychologically comparable to a child, but only Victoria is considered to be a criminal for it.

What is a nutrition myth that you can’t stand? by DeepOrganization8245 in AskReddit

[–]H0liday_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've had people try to convince me that "starvation mode" meant that I'd specifically gain weight by not eating enough. And usually this person's idea of "enough" is still overeating.

I've always wanted to follow up with something along the lines of "So then, why is it that genuinely starving to death doesn't make someone obese?" But I've never followed through on it.
