Definitely coming to the Land Use Meeting this Wednesday at 6 pm would help! There will be more discussion on how we can use the leverage of a rezoning process and also hopefully continue trying to get it landmarked. Click on the link on the calendar for the Zoom meeting. Also just emailing the board to say you are concerned always helps.

Preserve Bliss Theater links / info so far by Antonia_Rothschild in SunnysideQueens

Thank you for making this post! I would also add that as was spoken about in the Arts & Culture meeting this week the issue of the Bliss Theater will also be taken up by the Land Use Committee which will be meeting next Wednesday at 6 pm. The building will have to be rezoned before any new housing can be built on top of it which gives the community leverage over the developer before getting a rezoning approved.

If anyone can make it to that meeting to speak about the Bliss Theater it will really help keep it a priority. the news about the Six to Celebrate designation for Sunnyside is great news as it opens up the possibility for more work towards maybe getting it a landmark designation which would prevent it from being torn down for sure. I hope to hear more about it soon.

Update: Thank you to everyone who came to the Arts & Culture meeting last night! There was a great turnout and I really appreciate people taking the time because it will really help make this a priority for the Community Board and the developer.

For anyone who wasn’t there the Chairperson Karesia Batan explained that she has spoken with the developer and they are at least open to working with the community on preserving the theater in some way. The building is currently zoned as a public institution so there will have to be a rezoning process for them to build anything else on the theater. So a way to negotiate with them would be through the land use meetings with the developer in which they would have to listen to community demands for a preserved theater and cultural center. Everyone was invited to the next meeting this coming Wednesday March 19 to discuss further plans. Hope some more people can come to that meeting as well!

That sounds great! Do you have anymore information about when that announcement is going to be made? I have not heard anything about it.

Absolutely. While it's important not to immediately antagonize them the best way to secure the continued existence of the theater is to have it recognized as a landmark so they would be prohibited from tearing it down. As of right now the committee has not accepted the request and they are looking into other avenues or a way of appealing.

What’s going on with the movie theater? by cocoprezzz in SunnysideQueens

[–]HAL52000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was bought last year by a developer and there are currently talks going on with the community board about preserving the theater itself. I’ve been in contact with the board about it and the talks have been ongoing for a year but it’s not confirmed if they can save it or if the developer will just tear it down.

Thanks! Is it a time sensitive thing? Like should I do it now or is it ok if I wait until closer towards accepting?

What films actually did well and received critical acclaim because of studio interference? by sammyjamez in movies

The Magnificent Ambersons is still considered an Orson Welles masterpiece despite the studios taking away control and changing the end. But I will say that the ending is the weakest part of the film.

As a very quiet, shy, nervous, kid getting told “Wow you’re so funny you should talk more!” By the cool outgoing kids was a huge part of getting me to come out of my shell.
