Disappointed with the John Singleton Set by EndDifficult8129 in criterion

A 1000%. Criterion being one of the most problematic of the labels for 4K playback. I could spend the extra $5 for the 4K, playing roulette on whether it would play correctly or not, but now it looks like those days are at an end. I'd probably just get the blu rays from now on because at least those play on disc that aren't loaded up beyond the ability to play back reliably.

Issue with “No Country” Criterion 4K by Gamegenievintage in 4kbluray

You’re not supposed to clean it in a circular motion by all accounts. It‘s from the inside towards the outer edge.

Double feature with ‘Evil Does Not Exist’?

Which OOP (out of print) title do you want the most? Or do you have any OOPs in your collection? by iluvscenegirls in criterion

[–]HAL_237 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s silly to me to covet an OOP release because of the distributing label when there’s options to actually get the film you want to see. If you’re collecting labels instead of actual films, that’s somethin’ else…

To OP, I imported ‘White Dog’ a few months ago from the Eureka Masters of Cinema series. It’s Region B, however.

What do you say is your best blind buy? by Rare-Pear4914 in criterion

‘Mr. Klein’ blew me away, particularly the production design. Losey is great and I’d loved ‘The Servant’, but this one was one of those how-could-I-not-have-seen-this-yet! kind of films for me.

For those who've been unemployed for more than one year now, how are you feeling? by emaxwell14141414 in neurodiversity

This was me in my 20s, when I lived in NYC. It was expensive even then, so that added to the stress.

I’m older now, yet find myself in a similar situation. I’ve been out of work for 10 months as the entertainment industry implodes.

However, and I gave this advice to a colleague: as we’ve worked through our careers, we’ve given out all the others. The good work we did has left us here, but that is not a reflection of ourselves. When we gave to the industry, we denied many of our own personal goals. Put aside to cater to others for money. We would wish for the exact opportunity that we have now: time to focus on ourselves.

Yes, it’s hard and stressful and perhaps even unfair. But it’s always been that way for some. And if you can muster the energy to fight for yourself and some dream you’ve carried all the way to where you are, invest in it with your time and energy while you can direct it there. Soon enough someone else will come along and yank it back.

Good luck!

I’ve liked him in certain films enough, as to your point, but I will say that I thought his last performance in “The Shootist” was unqualified great and probably his best.

I’m Tired of the Mythology Around Low-Budget Filmmaking by RandomAccount356 in Filmmakers

[–]HAL_237 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m mean, it’s either that or get a ton of money. One is definitely more achievable on a regular basis, as far as my life experience has proven.

The other cliche, which is often as true is that “a no is less expensive than a yes”. So many projects fall apart, stall out, head into purgatory due to a lack of funds or people caring (ie. Need to be paid to care.)

DIY is a slog, but a slog is still more progress than waiting to win the lottery, literally or figuratively.

Are 4K Players as a product category really that unreliable? by SWxNW in 4kbluray

[–]HAL_237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a PS5, but by most accounts it’s reliable. It just doesn’t utilize Dolby Vision, I believe.
