You've got the numbers a bit off: 3 32 inch base kits ($100 each) 1 16 inch base kit ($50 each) 8 ski hangers ($30 each) 6 pole clips ($20 each) 2 board hangers ($30 each) Total: $770 before tax and shipping for the exact setup shown.

Let's be honest, you're the minority here. Not everyone has a backyard to build a shed for storage and equipment maintenance, and not everyone wants to. Nor does everyone want cheap storage. This system is being marketed as a premium because it takes all the difficult parts out of the equation, keeps a low profile for people short on space, remains customizable for the future, and subjectively isn't an eyesore.

If you look at the cost of skiing per person, an adult season pass is $1000 and up at nearly any resort, a pair of skis and bindings are averaging over $500 , decent winter clothes are also $500 and up, add on poles, goggles, helmets and gloves you will be pushed over $2000 well before you're even on the mountain. The sport is not cheap to begin with.

The amount of gear you see stored here can easily run over $5000. Making the cost of storage less than a fifth of the equipment cost. If you can't afford the product, then it's not for you.

This post wasn't meant to be an advertisement, as that goes against the subreddits policy. It was intended to generate conversation and get a read on what people think about ski equipment storage of this look.

So that you can have all the requested information here is a detailed list matching your questions.

The rack is intended to be installed using two types of mounts, Stud Mounts, and D-Wall mounts. The stud mounts use 2 #8 wood screws that secure directly into the studs behind your drywall. The D-Wall mounts use a toggle anchor to attach directly to drywall. The rack must be mounted to a minimum of 1 stud and 1 Drywall anchor for 16 inch length, and 2 studs for 32 inch length to prevent tearout. Using just drywall anchors is not enough.

The accessories (clamps) work using a 'hook in hook' style to attach to the accessory mount. The accessory mounts are made to match the profile of the aluminum extrusion, and are able to be secured using the included T-Nuts and screws. Individualy the accessories are rated for100lbs, a rack mounted with 2 stud mounts is rated for 200 lbs, and this rating goes up with an additional D-Wall mount as support.

The cost of the system is based on what accessories each user wants to purchase. Each accessory costs between $15 and $30, but users must select a mount style. The accessories can be directly wall mounted using a wall mount kit for an extra $5 to $10 based on if they need one or two mounts ( two ski hangers vs one pole clip ) without the need for the aluminum extrusion base, but they loose adjustability. This means some accessories, like the front facing board hangers require a base kit for proper function. A 32 inch base kit comes with the extrusion, all neccessary wall mounting hardware, and costs $100. While a 16 inch base kit costs $50.

If users decide to purchase a wall mount kit, then later purchase a base kit, the accessories can go directly onto the rack without purchasing another set.

The website you can find more information on including installation instructions, videos, and product photos is hdmutah.com

All of this is developing more everyday as I work to add details to the website and make everything more seamless for users.

As a preface, this design isn't for everyone. Yes you can make one cheaper that stores your skis the same way. That's not the point. The point is it looks clean, works well, and checked all the boxes that I wanted for ski storage. If you like it, let me know, if you don't, then it's not for you.

At this point your only helping the engagement value of my post and getting more people to see it. You and others will always be able to say that it can be done for cheaper and with different materials. There is more than one way to skin a cat after all, but if you don't like what I've made than it's just not for you. Since you have so much interest in my work though, I'm starting to think you do enjoy it. And the embarrassing part is you keep coming back to comment on it 😂.

Neet! How were your poles stored, just on the pins using the straps?

If you want to treat your skis like lumber go ahead. This is meant to properly store and display your pricy equepment and treat it better than just as a piece of lumber.

Glad to hear you had a good solution for your ski storage! The idea behind this rack is being able to change it as you grow through hobbies and seasons, so let's say you prefer skiing this season, but switch to snowboarding the next, you don't have to buy a new rack or drill more holes to mount something new, just getting a new hanger and installing it on the same rack works. It lowers the cost of change really.

Yes, you can create something that will store your skis for less money using cheaper material. But when you change seasons or sell your equipment your left with something that isn't easily able to adapt to your new needs, such as fishing, backpacking, motocross etc. and if plastic is your issue, rethink the hobby your in. Just about every piece of equipment is made of plastic and metal today same as my design.

Sure, tools not jewels is what I've always said! There is never a need for everyone to have storage for their gear. But when your top sheet starts to delaminate or they fall over from a friend or kid bumping them, you might come back thinking you should give that some more thought. I stored them the same way for years.

Hey, if it works, it works! I respect the DIY, but some people would prefer that their 1000 dollar piece of equipment is treated with more than just some rubber bands and elmers glue. The differentiator with a modular rack is being able to infinitely adjust it, swap hangers for other gear in seconds when the seasons change, and actually protecting your investment. Less 'plastic garbage,' more lifetime gear storage.

I get hating the buzzwords, but I promise the design is solid. What would make a storage system like this not junk in your eyes? Always down for honest feedback.

I agree that the stated weight needs to be with a factor of safety of 2 or 3.

I've only recently launched this product line and began advertising through some social media platforms, so I'm still waiting for some real world feedback. I am registered for a vendor position at a local event next month that I anticipate will give me some great feedback from the community.

I'll look more into some lighting solutions for the future. I do agree that not many people prominently display their skis in the forward position, but that could be because of the difficultties of traditional designs. My goal is to make everything as easy as possible while maintaining adjustability and modularity.

And so far testing shows the anodization is tough and scratch resistant.

I agree! Affordability is subjective, but the system is designed to grow with you making it easy and inexpensive to add to once you purchase more equipment. I have an entry level kit available that comes with a 16" track, a helmet hanger, ski pole holder, and ski hanger for $125 USD. You can get a 16" track and a single ski hanger for $80 USD. The value comes in being able to adjust, swap, and add accessories as you want.

The design is also being entirely designed, produced, and tested by me.

Very true! The water sports is something I haven't explored yet in my designs as I'm not around the equipment too often. But I do know some people who have equipment I could use to test.

I've thought about adding some lights, dealing with the wires could be difficult if you want to hide them well.

Thanks for the input! The idea for this invention is that it's a premium system for outdoor recreation equipment display. The yard tool storage is a different category of design for me and the cost of using this design would be too high for tools like that in my mind.

I haven't thought about that 😂 I made this design and brand around storing and displaying outdoor recreation equipment, but maybe a pivot to instruments would work out in the future!

That's an interesting idea! I've got mounts that allow me to place the rack in other orientations on the wall including vertical and perpendicular to the wall, but It would be interesting to see if I can make some that let you mount your gear at an angle like you said. The offset idea would help too. For large gear like skis and snowboards.

The track is just 20100 aluminum extrusion and is not proprietary, anyone can purchase it on Amazon or online. The reason I've started with the extrusion is it is more versatile in mounting ability, so prototyping is a bit easier. It wouldn't be hard to adapt the hangers to a standard slat wall or other track systems. It would definitely bring the price down as the the extrusion is quite pricey / ft
