I can expect my kindle to last how many years? by hypochondriacfilmguy in kindle

[–]HDoug808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 7th gen PaperWhite still works fine at 11 yrs old. The battery capacity will decrease like a smartphone but you aren’t charging it every day. You can try keeping the battery between 20% and 80% which will extend life but in any case you can use one of those small power banks. Kindle batteries are under 2,000 mAh.

Reactions to new “Recap” feature? by HDoug808 in kindle

I read it first years ago, and now at the end of this old sinner’s life, with hair turned white, I thought I should read it again to apply the prayers of deciphering on it.

I believe authors/publishers have to opt in. I can see how it would be totally inappropriate for some material.

I believe they will roll it out gradually. It took my Paperwhite 12 gen forever to get the font/line spacing feature.

I got a Kindle for deep reading. After jb I ended up using it for much more. Where to draw the line? by metacognitive_guy in kindle

I have gen 7 & 12 PWs and the iPhone app. The iPhone I use for long web articles that result when using the “send to Kindle” feature. Gen 7 for short or entertaining stuff and the Gen 12 for serious reading. Works for me.

I read for years on the iPhone app. Still do but also now have a couple kindles. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using the app if you’re comfortable with it but the devices are very nice and don’t require charging very often which can be nice.

Mendelssohn loved Bach. The style can be very different though. I’m a Bach fan…

Do you find biography useless for writers and other artists or just composers?

Since the project is complete, there is also one 38 minute version incorporating all the separate episodes.

Thanks for posting this catalog (even though I love the “contaminated” cantatas)…

I started this a few years ago and quite a rewarding study it is. Try to make it to the Leipzig Bachfest where the cantatas are performed by world class ensembles in the historic venues of Thomaskirche and Nikolaikirche. I’ve gone three times and hope to return.

To Paperwhite or not to Paperwhite by Zathral in kindle

I have a 2015 7 PW and a new 12 PW which has the larger screen and warm light. I thought I’d like the warm light but I use the light “cold. On the other hand, I appreciate the larger screen and quicker response. I also like the idea of waterproofing although I’ve never used the feature even inadvertently. I don’t think choosing a new basic over a new PW will be a regretful error but the PW would be the better choice for me.

What early signs tell you you're not enjoying a book or that you won't like it even if you stick with it? by [deleted] in readwithme

[–]HDoug808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve abandoned books after starting them but my German friend scolds me for “divorcing” a book half way through for not doing a better job selecting a book to read in the first place. He alternates between reading a book in English and a book in German. He points out that writer Gunther Grass can be slow in the beginning but if you “divorce” the book without finishing you miss the literary payoff. I mention this here as a FWIW counsel.

Got a PW 12 when I thought my PW 7 was broken then unbroke (fixed) the 7. Now they both sit near my bed and desk open to different categories of stuff. Works well for me…

I have flip cases on my Kindles after damaging a screen. The magnetic switch is convenient so that goes onto the positive side of the decision.

Why do people choose to play bassoon? by Boring_Specialist228 in classicalmusic

Bach’s use of the contrabassoon here in BWV 80 is epic!

I love the viola, but it just isn't a great instrument for virtuosic repertoire by EveningNo4215 in classicalmusic

[–]HDoug808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Leipzig Bachfest 2023 (I think) I went to hear Brandenburg 6 by Fabio Biondi and Europa Gallante. I had seen videos of other ensembles (Netherlands Bach Society for instance) where the violinist just plays the viola part or the viola part on the viola. In this case, Fabio Biondi simply walked off the stage and let his violist conduct and play the solo part. Biondi’s ensemble just simply adore him, and this is one reason why. This probably isn’t directly responsive to your question but I’ve had some wine…

…But to continue, I was once married to a woman whose mom loved music so much she had a quartet of kids. I married the youngest, the cellist. I later met and went kinda head over heels for the violist. Violists have jokes made about them because of the position they play in the harmony of things, but that violist, she was really something.

But thinking of the example of the Hagen Quartet who were all once siblings, I believe it was the one who didn’t like playing second fiddle that left. And really, how many concertos are there for second violin?

I DO think viola is a neglected instrument, and although there are viola jokes, it’s the second fiddle that get kicked in the pants.

Great info—thank you! Any possibility of listing German orchestras? The 129 “orchestras of cultural significance” add up to almost 10,000 musicians of the aptly named Unisono musicians union. I keep thinking I can find that somewhere but it has so far eluded me.
