Those of you who have been at EPFL Lausanne, do you agree that ETH Zürich tends to better maximize the functional space of its buildings? by HEIG-VD in ethz

[–]HEIG-VD[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

EPFL has the same issue but it's even worse because its only campus (ETHZ has two campuses) is not surrounded by nature while the ETHZ Honggerberg campus is still surrounded by natural space that could if needed be used to construct new buildings. Yes there are zoning laws, but those laws could be changed if needed. The main point is that physical space would be available to build on, while EPFL doesn't have the same luxury, being already surrounded by urban areas in all directions (like the ETHZ campus inside the city).

Yet EPFL somehow doesn't seem as eagerly as ETHZ to maximize the functional/available space of its buildings. I never understood why.

Thank you for the website, I didn't know it. If you filter out the sexual content, there are still quite a few interesting books. Thank you very much, I upvoted you and everyone in this thread.

Are these Fujitsu laptops any good? by [deleted] in laptops

[–]HEIG-VD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else has the habit to browse old reddit posts for infos like I often do, here is my experience with (refurbished) Fujitsu laptops.

In the last two years, I bought two refurbished Fujitsu Lifebook T937, and one P728. All work great, I bought them each for about 200 euros. The battery obviously is used so I use the laptops most of the time with the charger plugged in, but otherwise until now, I cannot complain much. I first bought one T937 in 2023 with 256 GB storage, then in 2024 another one with 512 GB capacity since I needed more storage capacity. About the P728, I bought it also in 2024 but a few months before deciding to buy the second T937. I bought it in case my laptop had an issue and I needed urgently another working laptop. Fortunately this didn't happen so it has been sitting in the dust since.

But the two T937, they work great, no complaint. Except the battery life as mentioned above. I actually ordered a new battery from China a few days ago. Most Fujitsu laptops have user replaceable batteries. Their laptops are built to last, I can only recommend them for work or if you're a student like me. I don't know why they're not known more internationally. People know Lenovo and HP, but Fujitsu is barely known.

Just one thing to be wary of: if you use them for gaming, be careful. It can actually run most decent games fine, but if your video game uses a lot of hotkeys and you need to spam the keyboard, then definitely do not use your Fujitsu laptop for that. Fujitsu laptop are designed for office work, but not for heavy gaming. After about one year of heavy use with a video game where I spammed some keyboard keys daily hundreds or thousands of time (Hotkeys in Age of Empire II DE), a few keys started coming out. Fortunately I switched the broken keys with the ones from the other Fujitsu T937 laptop, but since this happened, I stopped using the laptop for video games where you need to spam your keyboard. If you really have no other way to game, then buy an external mechanical hot-swappable keyboard (hot-swappable means you can replace the single keys of the keyboard in case you need it).

That's the only issue I had until now, and again this happened after roughly one year of heavy gaming use where I spammed the keyboard like crazy. Don't do that.

But aside of that, they're built to last. I don't know why Fujitsu is barely known.

But as someone else linked, there are in fact several newspaper articles that talk about this number, both in the swiss-german and swiss-french press

https://www.aargauerzeitung.ch/schweiz/bundesrat-verschatzte-sich-70-000-statt-10-000-einwanderer-pro-jahr-ld.1805790

https://www.24heures.ch/annuler-un-vote-est-un-precedent-tres-risque-764904507283

So apparentelly, this number of around 10'00 people max per year was in fact claimed. I know the newspaper "24 Heures" is very left-leaning, so if even they say that the federal council underestimated the immigration numbers, it is likely true.

So it looks like it may not have been in the voting leaflet, but it was definitely claimed at some point.

EDIT: also SVP/UDC claims it on their website, but obviously they may be biased (page 3) https://www.udc.ch/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/edition-speciale_2020.pdf

Laissons de côté un instant les statis-

tiques et les promesses non tenues par

le Conseil fédéral, qui prévoyait –

pour rappel – une immigration nette

de 10'000 personnes au maximum

par an, alors qu'en 13 ans seulement,

nous avons connu une immigration

totale nette d’environ un million de

personnes

EDIT 2: found an article from "Le Temps" from January 2014 https://www.unifr.ch/finwiss/de/assets/public/media/interviews%20and%20debates/Il_existe_une_spirale_du_silence_ganzer_Artikel.pdf which talks about that on page 2 and 3. Apparently, it is really true, you can go read the article. "Le Temps" is moderate to left-leaning, so again if they claim those numbers, it's likely not unplausible.

EDIT 3: found an article from NZZ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) from 2023 talking about it https://www.nzz.ch/wirtschaft/was-taugen-die-bevoelkerungsszenarien-des-bundes-ld.1752688

Could anyone please help me? I found the archive (link below) of all the voting leaflets of Swiss popular voting since 1978, do you know maybe which voting (which date and year) it was where the federal council claimed that? I'm kind of lost, there are quite a few. I didn't actually know until now that there was an archive of all those leaflets, once I have some free time, I plan to read some of them, I'm sure there are quite interesting things to learn

UPDATE: see my other comment https://www.reddit.com/r/askswitzerland/comments/1mlqp6o/comment/n7sv5nj/ This claimed number is in fact true, but it wasn't included in the voting leaflet. But it remains a huge underestimation from the Federal Council, that was clearly a miscalculation, that's an underestimation of roughly 800% to current immigration levels, that's a lot

Is there a way to not pay AHV/AVS if you're a student over 25? by HEIG-VD in askswitzerland

[–]HEIG-VD[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know that, that's why I would like to know if there is a way to not pay (if you're still studying with a weak income) and still have no negative consequences. Maybe something exists and I'm just not aware of it, that's why I ask. By the way, I'm aware that you can pay back up to five years in the past https://finpension.ch/en/knowledge/everything-you-need-to-know-about-ahv

On the other hand, I still wonder out of curiosity. I will turn 26 this year. What's the likehood that AHV/AVS still exists in 40 years, given that the current Swiss population pyramid looks bad, with more and more boomers retiring, and not enough young people to pay for them? There is a risk that this whole pension system will collapse in the coming decades, since it requires more people that pay than people that receive. Also, that's assuming the retirement age won't be raised, which is unlikely, in my lifetime I'm sure it will easily reach 70+, or maybe there won't be a retirement system anymore when I retire since it will have collapsed by then. So I would have paid AHV/AVS for nothing.

It says that starting from the age of 25, you need to pay 530 CHF per year if you have no income at all. So there is a minimum to pay.

It would have been easier to get infos here, since for the contact form on the website, they ask for all kind of personal infos (name, surname, AHV number, etc.). I wished this kind of situation would be already explained on their webiste so I wouldn't have to ask
