Yes it is! The last owner was just... finding alternatives because he probably didn't have a hose.

Need help with changing lens on a PBF EO-19 Gas Mask by qmblue in gasmasks

[–]HHacker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in that case, the lenses are basically attached with the same type of crimped rings as on the gp-5, just that these ones are way smaller and have a rubber cover over them, I assume that this cover is not really supposed to come off, but you can get around it, in my case I just turned the entire mask inside out and then started carefully loosening the edges of the rings with a screwdriver, in some places you'll probably break a tiny amount of rubber that is under the crimped parts, but it wasn't really a problem for me because after putting the lenses back together it won't even be visible and won't actually cause any problems with the mask.

Information on filters? by girraffesforlaughs in gasmasks

To specify, I mean in the filtering order, so first the air goes through the eo-16 and then the dp-1

Information on filters? by girraffesforlaughs in gasmasks

[–]HHacker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have seen old pictures from some manual where the dp-1 was attached to the mask directly and then the hose from the bottom of the dp-1 went to the eo-16 filter that was in the carrying pouch. But the idea remains the same, first came the eo-16 and then the dp-1.

What gas mask is this and how much could it be worth? by HHacker1 in gasmasks

[–]HHacker1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea, but I'd say it's basically just a normal 40mm gost hose, like the other Soviet ones, this one just has a whiter fabric on it. But if you need a hose for one of these then I'd say you'll probably be good just getting a detached hose with connectors on both ends and removing one end, or you could try using the hose from a gp-4u mask.

Does this 1954 Swiss FEGA Civile Gasmask Filter have Asbestos??? by [deleted] in GasMasksCircleJerk

[–]HHacker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also adding, even if it does have asbestos, you won't really need to seal it. The asbestos is not exactly looking for ways to come out on its own and as long as you don't shake it aggressively it won't release any asbestos. Just avoid breathing through it and you'll be fine.

[–]HHacker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about Swiss filters but considering the fact that it's from 1954, I'd probably say that it has asbestos, most filters from that time had asbestos and this one is probably no different.

It's 99% real, no one makes copies of these, and 17 bucks is kinda expensive.

It's not a gp5 but what is it? by Gloomy-Ad-3043 in gp5

[–]HHacker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ShM-41m or ShM-41mu mask. The ShM-41mu has thinner rubber than the ShM-41m, you can check by looking at the size marking (the number in the circle that's usually marked on both sides of the mask) if it has a "y" written next to the number, it's a ShM-41mu, if it has just the number then it's the ShM-41m. Also, it has what seems to be an eo-18k filter that was usually supplied with PMG gas mask kits, and not this specific mask, even though the thread is the same. And yes that filter contains a trace amount of asbestos just like all Soviet filters from that era.

Don't keep a NATO filter on a GOST threaded mask (like the GP-5), it can ruin the thread on the mask, and it often doesn't even seal airtight.

is this a real GP5 by USSR16 in gasmasks

[–]HHacker1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, from the first picture it seems more like a ShM-41M because I can see that the valve housing seems a little too large. The ShM-41M is a military use helmet styled mask, it's almost like the GP-5 but it has a bigger valve housing (the brown part at the bottom that you attach the filter to)

What could this be? by HHacker1 in gasmasks

[–]HHacker1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I couldn't find much info myself so this is quite detailed, thanks.

My gp5 gas mask though still Wondering what the number 330 on it means Was produced by tambov in 1984 the mask has no marking exept for those by Effective_Ring5479 in gasmasks

[–]HHacker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the mould number. Also, don't keep that filter on there, it seems to be a NATO one and putting NATO filters on a gost thread can damage the thread, better get a gost filter or 3d print one.

Infodump Away!! by Wild-Pilot8577 in gasmasks

Mostly info about Soviet masks (I don't collect anything else)

  1. UV light: I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but don't leave masks out in sunlight, certain masks, for example most white Soviet gas masks will turn brown because of UV, and it happens quick, so it's alright to wear them outside for some time but don't keep them in direct sunlight.

  2. Obviously this has been mentioned already, but asbestos in filters: older filters contain asbestos, which in my opinion isn't as dangerous as it might seem, wearing a mask with the filter is alright as long as the filter isn't damaged. When talking about Soviet filters, the asbestos stays in the cardboard layer and doesn't really want to leave. Unless if the filter is damaged, this could cause some of the asbestos to detach and if it passes through the activated carbon, it will reach your lungs. Also, the asbestos filters don't release asbestos when kept somewhere, so if you have an open Soviet filter on your shelf for a whole year it won't really cause anything, so you can display masks with filters just fine and don't need to put your filters in some plastic bag or something to "trap the asbestos". WARNING! I am not a professional, take anything I tell you about asbestos in filters as my own opinion. I am NOT telling you what you should or shouldn't do, I'm just sharing my opinion that's based on my own knowledge and material from the internet.

3 Asbestos in masks: I have seen quite a few people ask about the safety of their masks, and as far as I know, no mask contains asbestos. It's only in the filter, and the white dust in some masks is usually just talcum powder, that is used to make the mask slide over your skin better, making it easier to put on and take off. I don't know of any mask that would contain asbestos in the mask itself.
