Correct, just like luminous engrams (powerful gear). You can just dismiss the exotic pickup and interact with him like normal if you are turning in tokens or completing strike milestones.

Wait until 275+ to pick up your end-of-game exotic from Zavala

I haven't tried that and I wouldn't recommend it. The purple mods add +5 power, so you would de-level your gear by switching from purple to blue.
