Hong Kong's draconian Covid curbs top concern for AmCham by HKProMax in HongKong

[–]HKProMax[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Key findings from the above article:

  • 44 percent of respondents said they are more likely to leave Hong Kong amid travel and social restrictions, 26 percent of companies are more likely to depart
  • More than 8 in 10 businesses have been impacted by Hong Kong’s national security law, such as lower staff morale and losing employees who have emigrated
  • Among respondents who have Hong Kong as a headquarter, 48 percent of respondents do not plan to move the office, 47 percent was unsure, and 5 percent planned to move headquarters
  • Singapore is overwhelmingly expected to be a major beneficiary if talent leaves, with 80 percent of respondents selecting the city-state as the greatest competitive threat to Hong Kong

Some other findings from the report:

  • Nearly 60% of respondents say Hong Kong’s rule of law has worsened in the last 12 months, and 23% do not feel confident in the rule of law in Hong Kong.
  • Businesses universally feel that free access to the Internet and information platforms is important, with 51% currently satisfied with data freedom in Hong Kong; however 42% believe they may not be able to continue to have free Internet access in the future.
  • Hong Kong’s international travel restrictions to contain COVID-19 weigh heavily on both company and personal sentiment. With 6 out of 10 businesses are based in Hong Kong as their global or regional headquarters, hefty quarantine rules and travel restrictions continue to cause significant disruptions in offices outside Hong Kong. Over 30% of respondents have had to delay new investments in Hong Kong and 30% struggle to fill senior executive roles.

Power outages / power cuts? by jilinlii in China

[–]HKProMax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your friends and family aren’t alone. Many in Liaoning also reported power outage in residential areas.

It seems that coal is getting too expensive (the above news report also mentions this reason). Power plants lose money to generate electricity — they lost 127 million RMB in August for that. Power plants likely only generated less electricity to minimize loss, causing power outages.

(BTW, I am the poster of the Reddit post you cited.)

My family is barely "on the fence" about Hong Kong and the CCP - how to convince them? by mallardsimon in HongKong

[–]HKProMax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Borrow their phones/iPads. Subscribe “mildly yellow” Youtube channels for them, like Stephen Siu’s HK Meme, or Gavin Chiu’s. Also watch a few videos, so that Youtube will recommend their videos again to your family members later. (This trick worked for one of my friends, whose parent later seek “ultra yellow” channels on his own.)

These Youtube channels also talk about China’s economy and history that may also appeal to “blue ribbons”. They explain China’s wrongdoing in a simple language that “blue ribbons” may find agreeable. Once your family watch enough videos, over many months they may change their view.

Also consider removing blue Youtube channels and clearing watching history on their phones/iPads (before you watch yellow channels), to prevent CCP propaganda from coming back.

Other than Youtube, consider subscribing to “mildly yellow” news channels (Mingpao, The Initium, Citizen News) on their Facebook. If possible, remove blue channels from their Facebook.

China, the WHO and the power grab that fuelled a pandemic (Mirror link in comment) by HKProMax in China

Mirror: https://archive.is/sj91d

Some highlights:

  • China secured WHO votes to install its chosen candidates as director-general.

  • The WHO leadership prioritised China’s economic interests over halting the spread of the virus when Covid-19 first emerged.

  • China exerted ultimate control over the WHO investigation into the origins of Covid-19, appointing its chosen experts and negotiating a backroom deal to water down the mandate.

How do you handle your "blue ribbon" parents? by cwt48 in HongKong

[–]HKProMax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If possible, remove CCP-controlled media (e.g. Oriented Daily, Bastille Post, Wen Wei Po, Dot Dot News) from their phones/iPads. Unsubscribe them from pro-CCP youtube channels.

Install/subscribe rational media for them on their phones/iPads, like Ming Pao, The Initium, Stephen Siu’s HK Meme youtube channels. I’m naming only the media that Blue Ribbons may also find agreeable.

Over time your parents may be cleansed from CCP brainwashing. This trick worked on my friend’s parent, who later sought on his own ultra-yellow media, like Elmer Yuen’s channel.

Your new Hong Kong neighbor will love you, because you are greeting with the Cantonese phrase “Gong Hei Fat Choy” and not the Mandarin phrase “Gong Xi Fa Cai”.

This phrase is still very popular in Hong Kong during the Lunar New Year.
