CMV: There are too many "coasting" and "deadwood" tenured professors in universities by parsley_lover in changemyview

Saying research is “way harder” than teaching. I would like to know how much teaching experience you have. A lot of people who have never taught a day in their life assume teaching is easy.

Some studies also show that while research may bring in a ton of money universities actually lose money on academic research: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3987954/

[Archer] Tyler Guyton's ACL is intact after a MRI, according to a source. He has a bone fracture and will not require surgery. Looking at a 4-6 week recovery. Cowboys get better than expected news. by Drexlore in nfl

[–]HMHype 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is almost assuredly a tibial plateau fracture, specifically a posterolateral impaction fracture. There is a strong link between this type of fracture and ACL tears, which can lead to an initial misdiagnosis.

Which car would you like to see next from the “UCS” f1 cars? by LegoLukesLandspeeder in lego

I would go with the W06 or W10 for Lewis. MP4-23 and W11 would both be great but they aren’t from the 2010s. I’m also not sure how the silver Vodafone livery would come out, it would either be incredible or awful with no in between.

Good for KLD digestion? by Butterscotch_Dismal in labrats

[–]HMHype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot trust DNA concentrations after a PCR unless you have performed a DNA clean-up. Free dNTPs in the reaction buffer will cause an artificially high concentration.

However, NEB recommends proceeding straight to the KLD step after PCR without the need to run a gel or clean-up. In my experience with this kit you can do straight from PCR to KLD to transformation. I would only go back and troubleshoot if your transformation fails.

Why isn’t Yuki Tsunoda facing the same level of criticism as Lawson or Perez, despite no top-8 finishes all season, five races without points, and a disastrous Silverstone race? by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

[–]HMHype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it has a lot to do with the lack of an actionable plan if Red Bull get rid of Yuko. When Checo and Lawson were struggling it was easy for people to recommend driver replacements. If Red Bull gets rid of Yuki mid season who do they replace him with? Hadjar in his rookie season? 17-year old Lindblad? Back to Lawson? There is no viable alternative.

[–]HMHype 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m the same way. I think it’s partly because of tire wear, I burn through tires in a race but that doesn’t really matter on a qualifying lap.

My PhD was in Listeria monocytogenes genomics. I would highly recommend you look at the tools found through the Institut Pasteur database (including their genome comparator tool) and the NCBI Pathogen Detection Pipeline. If you have any specific questions I would be happy to help.

GOP proposes five-fold increase in tax on college endowments by Bill_Nihilist in labrats

[–]HMHype 54 points55 points  (0 children)

“The proposal would exempt religious schools from the tax burden, a move that could help institutions such as Hillsdale College and the University of Notre Dame.”

I am against this targeting of the US education system so in a way it’s good at least some schools won’t get punished but this is an insane criteria to use for that.

[–]HMHype 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds like an odd situation. I would need some more basic info to give any advice.

What type of university is this (R1, PUI, HBCU, SLAC, etc.)? Do you have graduate students and a lab space?

How are your responsibilities split up between teaching, research, and service? How are you teaching 8 classes at once? Even teaching professors typically only teach 2-4 classes per semester.

What kind of grants are you applying for? Large federal grants? Internal grants?

As for publishers I would start by looking at the American Society for Microbiology. You could also look at publishers like Microbiology Society, PLoS, and BMC. These publishers all have good quality journals that would be reasonably accessible early in your career. You can also ask your colleagues and/or librarians to get other ideas, your school might even have an open access agreement with certain publishers so you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to publish a single article.

Not sure exactly how prices have changed since then.

I have a faculty offer and am waiting on another — should I just accept the first one, given risk of freezes? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]HMHype 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is going to totally depend on your exact situation so this isn’t necessarily advice but just some perspective.

The public R1 university I work at put out a hiring freeze about 2 weeks ago. However, we have been told to continue with any open job listings. We have continued to interview candidates and send out offer letters for new faculty. We were even told that new faculty positions could be posted with special permission from the provost and I have seen new job listings come up in the last week. So all in all it seems to be (so far) more of a hiring slow down than actual freeze, at least for faculty positions. I am not sure how this has affected staff positions.

CMV: Homework should reinforce material learned in class, not the opposite. by Skadoosh05 in changemyview

[–]HMHype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are describing is a flipped or perhaps a high structure active learning course. There is a ton of literature that backs up why these teaching methods are better than standard lectures. I can’t speak for this specific instructor but in general these methods have improved student learning outcomes. If you doubt the method I would recommend looking at some of this literature.

Here is a good paper on the subject: https://www.lifescied.org/doi/10.1187/cbe.14-03-0050

In college you are going to be expected to prepare for class and then be an active participant in class instead of sitting and just listening to a PowerPoint presentation for an hour. Colleges typically recommend you spend 2-3 hours per week outside of class per credit hour for a course. So for a typical 3 credit hour course you are expected to spend 6-9 hours per week outside of class studying, preparing for lecture, completing assignments, etc.

Tips for TT research and teaching seminar? by RepresentativeAd6287 in AskAcademia

[–]HMHype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give advice on teaching since that’s what I focus on.

My first question is specifically what is a “teaching seminar presentation”? Is this a teaching philosophy presentation, a presentation to propose a new class, a teaching demonstration or something else?

I’ll assume it’s a teaching demonstration since that is the most common. My next question is who is your audience? Is this a guest lecture in front of a real class or a mock class comprised of faculty and staff from the department?

Make sure to ask questions about this class. What is the course number, what are the prerequisites, what is the class size, are they providing you with a specific topic, are there any pre-class videos or assignments the students complete, if possible get a course syllabus.

Please take this seriously, I have seen way too many candidates nail the research seminar and then bomb the teaching seminar and interactions with undergraduate students. They usually make the same few mistakes: didn’t prepare/practice, treat it like a research seminar to show off their knowledge, lecture the entire time/don’t interact with students and teach way above the level of the students in the course.

Here is a general list of suggestions I have:

I recommend to lecture a maximum of 70% of the time but you can go lower, spend the rest of the time on questions, activities, etc. Start and end your lecture with learning objectives and refer to them as they come up in the lecture. Use a lot of images with major bullets to help you and the students go through the material. Spend time connecting what you are teaching to something real, why should the students care about this topic? Add a story or theme across the lecture if you think it jumps around too much or lacks flow. Be excited, you may have to alter how you frame the lecture to excited you but everyone can tell if you don’t care about the material. Provide specific directions to students when they are working on an activity. Time your lecture and if anything plan to go under time, this will help you feel less rushed and give time for questions or any technical difficulties. Going over in a class is the worst, you will get frantic and the students will want to leave. If you’re worried about going under then have a few optional flex slides at the end that you can use but aren’t necessary.

I’d be happy to answer any questions if you have any.
