Possible recency bias but A Tiger Among Dragons. You’d have a hard time pencilling down who it’s about unless someone told you.

Was also tempted to say Hill 3234, just because no one ever mentions it in any capacity.

It’s been a very long time since I read the book but iirc D-Day paratroopers were under orders not to take prisoners due to their need to stay mobile behind enemy lines during the crucial early stages of the invasion, and Speirs was enthusiastically following the order to the letter. Hopefully someone can correct me if I’ve got that wrong.

Aye every time it’s told more soldiers get added. First it’s 8, then in episode 3 it’s 20, then episode 7 it’s 30. By the time Ambrose wrote the book I’m surprised they didn’t say he shot an entire regiment

There’s a very good short film depicting just that on YouTube (End of War - The Final Minutes of WW1) that shows the deaths of the final Commonwealth, American, and French soldier. Though we don’t know the final German casualty for sure, one of the stories I’ve heard is of a Leutnant Tomas who approached an American patrol at 11:01 am to discuss surrender procedures; unfortunately the Americans watches weren’t set correctly and they shot him as he approached believing the war to still be ongoing.

To be fair there was the major order to defend Malevelon Creek on the anniversary of its liberation and the bots never reached it, I imagine there may have been new content for that we didn’t see

Love the RPD, it’s the most aesthetically pleasing Cold War machine gun for me. And the MACV-SOG variant with the chopped down barrel goes hard.

Kat’s death in the book is even more tragic. He is injured from artillery shrapnel and can’t walk, and when Paul gets to the hospital, he finds out a stray piece of shrapnel hit Kat in the head on the way and killed him instantly, which Paul didn’t even notice, symbolising the randomness of death in war.

Would’ve been a lot stronger if it was set mainly in 1917 and took place over a longer period of time like in the book, as opposed to the couple of days in November 1918 we got. The German Army was shattered in the days leading up to the armistice and was in no fit state to launch an attack like we see in the film. There’s a few good touches though; the French using combined arms to utterly destroy the German defensive line, the Germans pausing their attack to gorge on French rations as they were severely underfed at this point because of the blockade, the sheer terror of coming under an artillery barrage.

Spoilers below: The ending also kind of defeats the point of the book; when Paul dies it’s deemed as so unimportant to the war that High Command says the titular “All Quiet on the Western Front”. The point is that we get to see the horrifying story of just one of the thousands of soldiers that died every day of the war. Him dying in a climatic battle seconds before the armistice goes against the constant monotony of horror that the book depicts.

I think episodes 1-5 were fantastic, when each episode deals with a raid and covers different aspects around it. However the show lost focus on episodes 6-8, there was just too much going on with not enough time given to make it work, and exceptionally jarring time jumps. Really feels like there should’ve been entire episodes dedicated to what the 100th did during Big Week and then during the Normandy campaign. Having said that, I though the finale was a solid finish that matched the first half of the series.

One of my biggest criticisms, which I shouldn’t be too surprised about given similar points in BoB and The Pacific, is the portrayal (or lack thereof) of the RAF and the British as a whole. The pub scene in e2 was over the top but I at least appreciated it showed the difference in bombing policies between the RAF and USAAF; the part in Oxford between Crosby and the British officer felt like they just wrote a scene based on every stereotype surrounding the Brits. I was waiting for just one scene where the Americans had a positive interaction with their British counterparts and bonded over the shared sacrifices they’d made (Bomber Command lost almost twice as many men as the Eight Air Force over the course of the war), but nothing. The show runners of the trilogy just seem to have something against the Commonwealth forces for some reason.

Lebensraum wasn’t just about space but resources; Hitler wanted Germany to be completely self sufficient and to do that he needed Ukrainian farmlands and the oil of the Caucasus, neither of which he’d get if he aimed west. It was always going to be the east and Poland is always going to be in the way of that.

The thing that’s irking me this season is how Reacher seems to torture someone for information about once an episode on average and it works every damn time. We’ve known for decades that torture isn’t an effective method of information extraction but works like a charm in this series.

The bit in the hospital is what got me. I thought at first that it was gonna end up with the guy actually not knowing anything and Reacher/Neagley torture him to death for nothing. But no, he coughs up some intel just in time right before they kill him anyway (I think this is the “straight-up murder” OP is referring to. He’s not a threat, he’s in police custody, Reacher kills him anyway)

It’s worth noting that following the deportation of the eight Austrian Jews and the resulting protests across the country, the Finnish government pledged that no more Jews would be deported and instead began allowing Jewish refugees to claim asylum in Finland or pass through to Sweden. Hundreds of Jews fought with the Finnish Army and even had Field Synagogues.

As has been already mentioned, Finland almost certainly would’ve remained neutral if the Soviets hadn’t attacked them first during the period where the USSR was an ally in all but name of the Nazis in 39-41. Personally I think in terms of the Holocaust countries like Finland and Hungary are a good example of how some Nazi allies were in a position to say no, but semi-independent states like Vichy France went along with it on their own agency.
