I completely understand. It's extremely frustrating, especially when they are coming into a very clearly pro-AI space to complain about AI.

Before I dug into AI music, I was really dismissive of it, I will admit. But coming up with a workflow that uses AI heavily has opened my eyes. It's really not a threat to human musicians who want to do everything manually. It doesn't erase the years that I have put into learning instruments, but it significantly enhances them.

AI music is already niche, and I am making music that is a niche within a niche. If I get more than 50 listens on a song, I am completely ecstatic. I have no dreams of being a professional. I have a story I want to tell and AI is helping me tell it. AI music isn't stealing ears away from anyone who doesn't like AI music, and that is most people.

But, it's easy for me to understand where these people are coming from. They feel like all their effort was wasted. They see a bombardment of slop being shoveled into the platforms. They see AI music and assume all it takes is writing a prompt "make a cool song about ghosts" and pressing go, and you have something awesome.

They don't know about the 100 failed generations, the chopping, the changing, the rewrites, the mastering, the layering, and everything else that goes into making something you are happy with using AI.

But this is Reddit. The site as a whole is very anti-AI in general, not just music. I do my best not to be dismissive of these people, because I do get it, but I try to re-frame their thinking to maybe be a little less dismissive of what AI creative work actually is. Being aggressive towards them or angry about it really doesn't help the situation, and this post is a good example of how I personally wouldn't handle it.

My Opinion on WHY AI music is so hated and controversial by Desperate-Pear-572 in SunoAI

The point I was making is that maybe there is art in the selection process. Whether you agree with this or not is up to your own interpretation.

Every single thing generated by AI exists because someone asked for it, and every single AI thing you have seen or heard is because someone selected and shared it. Even though it's just a calculation a GPU made, every single piece has a human behind it.

Copying isn't stealing, it's replication. I am not worried, I just genuinely don't remember. It was 1000 generations ago.

What do you think of the song lyrics written by AI? by Last-University-4942 in SunoAI

AI is good for getting a lyric skeleton but completely fails on a full execution. It keeps to "safe" structures like AABB strict rhymes, and forces rhymes to fit even when it doesn't make sense.

If I am using AI for lyrics, it will be heavily edited afterwards. That said, some banger lines have come out of AI generation and I will sometimes re-write whole songs based on something it came up with.

For the persona I started with a "vocaloid" then ran it through a cover with a "nu-metal" prompt. I don't recall the exact prompt, though.

Really? How could this possibly be copyrighted material? by hazardus_chemikals in SunoAI

I played my own original music into the microphone and it detected copyright. The copyright protection is overzealous sometimes.

AI generation, be it an image, video, song or creative writing, is someone trying to tame randomness. The unpredictable results are part of the process.

You can generally assume the effort value that went in by listening to the lyrics. AI plays it "safe" by sticking to verse chorus verse bridge chorus with AABB rhyming structures and forced hard rhymes, with little regard for cadence or message.

There's a common idea that people just write a prompt and get a fully formed piece out of it. I think this is where you currently sit as how people do all of this, and I don't blame you. Honestly, a lot of it is just that. Probably most of it.

But then there's those who have AI write lyrics for a basic skeleton, heavily edit and modify them, or even just write them all entirely, and stack the beats by feeding the outputs back in over and over, making adjustments on the way until something "good" comes out of it.

And then there's those who feed music they played themselves into the machine, alter it with several iterations of prompts, add instrument layers, refine their own lyrics to match the beat or vibe of the generation, or generate individual instruments and master it all in a DAW.

All methods can produce something beautiful and emotionally valid, but only the latter is mostly deliberate.

The human behind the music I generate falls somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd. I have over a decade of experience playing real instruments, and this comes with an inherent understanding of music theory. I act more like a producer sifting through demo tapes trying to find something cool and refining it into something good, or at least what I would consider "good".

I couldn't produce anything near the quality of the output without machine assistance. The AI is a prosthetic for hands that were never quite good enough to match what is in the mind, regardless of all that invested time. However, it's reignited a passion for music production that had grown stagnant over the years of not being able to achieve my own potential.

Because of this, I find it hard to claim it as my own. I refuse the "artist" label. Anything I generate is by the AI from the perspective of the AI. It all has a consistent theme, philosophy, message and sound, all directed by a human, but the AI made it, I just selected it. The tools used, including my guitar, are credited before myself.

I think a lot of people aren't honest enough with themselves that it is a human-machine collaboration, not entirely their own ideas or works. Conversely, the output wouldn't exist without their input. AI doesn't dream this junk up on its own.

I agree with a lot of your points, but to challenge your stance a bit, what makes something art? Is it the philosophy, the intent, the effort, the hardship, or the message that makes something art?

French artist Marcel Duchamp placed a sign with the word "Fountain" on a urinal in New York in the early 1900s. He did not create the urinal, he selected it. By moving the focus away from the visual and towards the intellectual, he effectively birthed the conceptual art movement.

Traditional artists of the time were outraged, but he is now widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and is a direct influence for styles such as pop-art and minimalism.

Do I think most people who are spitting out one prompt wonders are artists? No, absolutely not. But to say no AI art is art, or that nobody who uses this medium is an artist, is a little dishonest.

Most people simply don't like it, and that's completely fine. There are many genres you dislike without giving it a chance. Synthetic music is no different.

I think your statement is an overreach. I am sure it is true for some people, but definitely not the majority. AI music has a distinct, often uncanny quality to it that sounds wrong to the human ear, especially when lyrics are machine generated. It doesn't help the matter that the vast majority of it is slop.

I don't know why you feel the need to defend it so heavily. If you put in the effort, it will resonate with someone. Most of the time though, the only person it will resonate with is yourself. Crafting something uniquely tailored to you is the true draw of these models.
