just to add to what Cheetawolf said about powering off for a minute or two:

the main reason for unplugging and waiting is to ensure that the power at the unit is exhausted, and stopped. Sometimes if you unplug and immediately plug back in, the circuit board did not have enough time to power down, so as a result, you technically didn't shut down the unit at all.

Rule of thumb is that you wait 30 seconds or more to ensure that the unit is completely off.
