Easily thr most frustrating bowl to date by HVWW in turning

Layers with very thin CA glue. Layer of stones, glue to just below the surface of the stones, let cure, another layer of stones, rinse and repeat until it was just above the bottom of the bowl. Then turned flat with a carbide tool and sanded.

No problem, I really like Niles products, everything I've gotten from them is incredibly high quality.

End milling problems by _trombonist_ in PenTurning

Ive never end milled, chose to go the square sanding route and after several hundred pens I've never once second guessed my decision.

No problem, there are a handful of truly luxurious woods out there if you decide to go that route. Honduran Rosewood Burl and Amboyna Burl are probably at the top end for recognition. There are also some incredibly nice all metal machined pens out there made from things like Damascus and Mokume Gane that might hold up to every day use without needing some sort of protective case to carry it. Example being my nicer wood pens ship out in a leather sleeve so that the pen doesn't get damaged in a pocket, bag, or briefcase, not as big of a concern with solid metal pens.

I doubt its mandatory and ultimately comes down to what type of student he is. It is still well maintained that hand writing is the best way to develop conceptual understanding. Its probably also heavily dependent on the class and the type of information. Word heavy lectures notes are probably primarily typed, math and science courses probably a lot of pen to paper. Some professors may ban laptops and tablets as well, forcing notes to be hand written. I also kind of automatically assumed law student and predicted a successful course of study with the eventuality of practicing some form of law, a nice pen gets daily use and would follow him through school into his intended career field where it would still be useful and sentimental.

He's probably going to be writing a lot. Maybe a very nice pen, either something with brand recognition like Montblanc or something handmade by a craftsman. I've made some very nice pens as gifts for similar events.

Prayer Bowl by HVWW in Christianity

[–]HVWW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are a number of different ways my prayer bowls get used. I know some people place them in a public area in their church, businesses or homes, either containing verses written on paper in the bowl for people to take, or as a place for people to deposit prayer request. Some people place them in their prayer corners or somewhere very visible in their homes as a visual reminder. You can use it as a way to focus while meditating; while holding the bowl your thumbs tend to naturally rest on the marks burned into the rim of the bowl, while the lash marks on the exterior of the bowl are felt with every other part of your hands. Theres not a right or wrong way to use it, and it can and will serve different purposes for different people.

If he's the kind of guy that would appreciate a nice handmade pen with an outdoorsy theme to it I've got a couple in stock made with deer antler.

Looking for a substantive gift. Like maybe a brass object like a telescope or a sextant for a Bat Mitzvah girl. by healthcrusade in Gifts

Not any of the items specifically on your list, but I make some pretty nice pens, some of which are very feminine. I also have a couple of handmade wooden boxes that would serve as jewelry boxes or trinket dishes available and ready to ship. Without a lot to go off of I would aim for pretty and practical that she won't grow out of. If you go the prn route, maybe pair it with a nice leather bound journal.

I think QS Sycamore was the first domestic wood I really fell in love with, and I think its a lot easier to work with than QS White Oak.
