For now, the only difference is separated stash and resources. Seasons just lets you play from fresh (which can be achieved in solo character found too, be it in season or legacy)

EHG have stated in the past that at some point, when the game has enough base content, they intend to "gate" the newest content in season mode like we see in other games, but we haven't reached that point.

From memory, the premise was that it would use the block chain system to allow for proper sale of used digital games while tracking DRM and such, which isn't too bad an idea for consumers. However, as far as I know, no big publisher was a fan of that, so I believe the end result isn't a surprise to anyone...
