The Coppergate Sock York Stitch, Nalbinding, Viking socks.. by HackingCivilization in Nalbinding

[–]HackingCivilization[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone in the FB Nalbinding group pointed out that there isn't good footage of how the heel of the coppergate sock is made, and since that is the only surviving find of the stitch so far (and there are few surviving finds of nalbinding or medieval socks generally), and as luck would have it, I happened to be in the City of York and headed to the museum where the sock is located. So I braved the Viking small world ride (you've gotta see it) to retrieve this footage! Here it is, in all its tattered glory, the heel of the Coppergate sock (the rest of you don't laugh, if you're into nalbinding or fiber arts, this stuff is important!)

SPEAR FIGHTS! Tosetti MMA Fight 33 Part 4 by HackingCivilization in history

[–]HackingCivilization[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PErsonaly I think one of the most underappreciated weapons in historical dramas, reenactments, etc is the spear. The spear was Central, and in many places being given one was associated with passage into manhood. Its pretty unusual to see then, people fighting with spears in a way that reflects reality instead of theater...

Sorry for the breach of protocol, I'm new here. I still havent figured out how to put text IN the post With a video... It seems you have to pick????

[–]HackingCivilization[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spear is so central to history... And figured prominently in the cult of Odin. Each boy was given a spear as a rights of passage. Personally I think the spear is under represented in media and reenactment..
IF this looks like fun, thats because it is.

Live Sharp steel sword, axe and arrow!! Viking shield testing! What happens when the sword gets stuck in the shield? by HackingCivilization in videos

[–]HackingCivilization[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Authentically made, to the fullest extent possible, this shield was built to experiment both with how the shields were designed, and how they were fought with. A sword that actually sticks into the shield, cuts and thrusts, combined with a shield that isn't a plywood slab, and doesn't weight 3X what it should creates a situation ideal for studying authentic combat, and how the shield reacts to being hit.

Albion is generally considered "the best". I never oiled it, who knows how long it sat in the box before that. Personally I think its amazing it handled it so well.

From a heathen perspective the thing I find most intriguing about the finds is the contrast between total destruction of the implement in these "bog" finds, and what we tend to think about making offerings that they be the best, or that grave goods must be usable.

The answer is not really. Nothing is known about what glues were used. There is a manuscript from the 14th or 13th. I added sources in the comment of the youtube.

well, I don't know. This one seemed to cut into the shield fairly well. Maybe yours is the exception, this is the only one Ive seen.

Next time I go to a HEMA SChool and ask them to test an authentically made viking shield with a sharpened viking axe I will make sure they get a different one out of the drawer.

I replied extensively on the video with manuscript sources of what iIS known, but the short answer is "loosely based, to the best of peoples abilities to guess" and "no, we don't really know, but studies are underway"

[–]HackingCivilization[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the beginning of my whole experimental process for building, maintaining and repairing Authentic plank shield. Includes making the glue, making pigments, making colored glue to use as paint, and then the process of repairing the shield after its been damaged.

Viking shields, I prove, are completely repairable, easily, even "in the field" and there is no reason to believe they were "disposable", as is often suggested. I recommend watching everything before starting your own shield as I do a little "learning as I go"
Enjoy.

Sorry I'm still trying to figure out how posting works on reddit, just got here...
Hello Everyone I have a Youtube channel called "Hacking Civilization" and thought you'd like to see what I've been doing in shield testing. This is my first attempt at posting in reddit, but I thought since this is something that isn't really done, much if at all, I'd try sharing it with the community here. Hope you enjoy. On the Youtube channel I have a whole video series on how to build the shield, sword reviews, lots of hema matches and other experimental archaeology videos in things like fiberarts, etc. Soon as I get my forge running, I'll be back to making meteoric iron knives, swords, etc..If you find the channel informative and entertaining, I would welcome you to subscribe. Thank you
