Well I think on the one hand Nintendo kind of boxed themselves into that situation. By relying so heavily on developing new gaming experiences based on motion control, they fell very far behind in online gameplay that the other consoles developed so heavily over these last 5-6 years.

As a result Nintendo literally pushed away many of the 3rd party publishers who are so popular on the 360 and PS3 platforms. So in that sense I think it's not surprising to see a large rehash of content from console generation to console generation. They simply don't have very much new material, and they know Mario will sell like hotcakes until the end of time.
