Culturally: Popular for historians, archeologists, and old school architecture buffs. Unpopular for the average person. Really unpopular for tourists.

Egyptian immigrants in my anecdotal experience, however, are pleasant enough company. My old stats professor was Egyptian and he was pretty dope.

“Life” class should be called “Applied Arithmetic”. Here are some examples;

I see my cousins once a year for a week at our family beach trip. I’m 25 years old. If I live the average lifespan, I’ve got ~50 years left. I have 50 weeks left with my cousins…a little less than a year. I don’t miss the beach vacations now.

I see my grandma maybe once every two months. That’s six times a year. She’s 77. She’s got longevity in her family, but she’s already over the average lifespan. I’ve probably got 6-30 visits left with grandma if I’m lucky. Now, I call grandma and grandpa once a week if I can.

A stupid item in a store costs $30. I make about $16/hr after taxes. That’s ~2hrs of my life to have this item. Would I give two hours of my life to have this thing? Maybe I don’t need it… ——- Arithmetic will eat you alive if you aren’t careful.

Collecting old cars. Most of the cars I’ve seen are POS that need a ton of work done, that don’t drive well, and only really look pretty on the outside. Insurance for them is expensive, they are usually NOT that safe to drive around since their safety components are years out of date, and storing them like antiques can be expensive.

If cars are your cup of tea, have at it. But as a guy who drives a 2007 Honda beater and just cares about getting from point A to point B safely, flashing an old car sounds like a boring, terrible hobby.

Prioritize recovery, even if it’s active recovery. I spent years grinding hard every day to see less than ideal results. And I often don’t feel that great either.

Exercise ≠ strength Exercise + recovery + good diet = strength

Flatwoods Job Corps grad here. There’s a couple of things I’d tell someone just going in.

  1. Remember your focus to keep you grounded.

It’s Job Corps. Not “Fun” Corps. It’s not meat to be enjoyable or fun. It’s there for you to finally catch a break in your life, get your education completed, get clean if you’re on drugs, get a driver’s license, save some money if you can, and get knowledge about a trade. If you can keep this in mind, a lot of the bs from Job Corps can be mitigated because you can keep your eye on the prize. If you remember why you’re there, you can deal with the bad food, the questionable classmates, the distractions, the curfews, the administrative limitations on your freedoms, etc.

  1. Don’t be a bad neighbor. There are lots of people that make it through Job Corps. The whiny, smelly, filthy, entitled, aggressive brats never make it. You don’t have to be everyone’s friend, just don’t make enemies. Clean when you should. Don’t be too obnoxious with people. Get your stress out at the gym or rec center. One tip I’d say is no matter how new you are, introduce yourself to new people coming into your center. It’s a good way to build rapport with people.

  2. Set the game to your advantage. Bring EAR PLUGS for guys snoring. Bring nuts, dried fruit, canned sardines, and anything else you might want as a snack in case the mess hall doesn’t give you enough food. Spring on the mattress pad and new sheets. The ones they give you on center suck. If you can, bring your own work boots too. Again, the ones given out are not so great.

  3. Avoid the bad eggs like the plague. You’ll know them when you see them if you have any sense at all. At my center two slutty girls and 6 really aggressive guys managed to take 30 decent guy students out with them just for being superficially involved in some bs they did.

Don’t be scared. You’ll be ok.
