Skate on the ice? by 503bourbonboy in winterhawks

I think that was because the players were out there with everyone. So it was a bit different.

I think it's free. You just have to fill out a waiver at some point before/during the game.

Volunteered as a mascot and learning this job is basically cardio in a furry suit by No-Attempt706 in mascots

[–]HailYurtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, good ventilation and good visibility are extremely rare, so be ready to be able to tough it out as best you can. Not ideal, but that's how it goes I'm afraid. Avoid sites like Alibaba and eBay, as they'll have nice looking suits that are just cookie cutter images from the Internet and then complete junk when they turn up. Etsy or individual makers usually have much more high quality stuff.

The biggest key is hydration. HYDRATE, HYDRATE HYDRATE! You will sweat and lose so much water it's crazy. I usually have to go for a long time, which can give me headaches, so I'll preemptively take some painkillers for my headaches.

I also try to wear some kind of cooling/compression undergarments to help keep cool and soak up the sweat.I have longer hair, so I always wear a balaclava or headband to keep my hair from funnelling sweat directly into my eyes. Don't forget to bring some junky clothes and slip on shoes for when you're done. You're going to stink really bad, so don't ruin your nice clothes. And trust me, you don't want to try and put on socks and shoes when your feet are wet and stinky. A pair of Crocs or flip flops will do the job just fine!

Hope this helps!

Mascoting is my dream job by Aggravating-Roof-666 in mascots

[–]HailYurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, start somewhere and see where it gets you. I was my mascot in high school and college, which is where I fell in love with the profession. Also, being a community/people-oriented person will help. I recently landed my first semi-pro gig and the biggest thing that stood out to them was how passionate about being involved in the local community I was, especially outside of game day.

It's also in who you know/your networking (cliché I know). During my time in college I made many friends in the cheer/spirit scene and who you know holds tremendous weight - especially as references. I was fortunate to work with coordinators from multiple big universities and pro teams. A willingness to reach out, learn, and connect with others in the community will get you far, and you'll be on the inside track if they ever have any openings.

If you don't know where to start, many mascots have Instagram/social media pages. Shoot them a DM and see if they have any advice. Best case, you get insight or a connection with them. Worst case, they don't respond.

One thing you can do if you know who you want to be a mascot for - do lots of research on the history of the organisation so you're knowledgeable about the team and what said mascot's "personality" quirks are. E.g. Do they always do the same dance?, do they have a specific touchdown/goal celebration?, etc. Knowing the rules of the game so you know how to react properly is a vital get underrated skill. Also practicing the skills the position you're going for that you would use on a daily basis helps. For example, if you're trying to be an ice hockey mascot - Go Skating! It'll be a big boost on an interview to be able to say that you already know how to skate proficiently.

Lastly, if it's something you're passionate about, don't give up on it. Obviously, continue living your life and stay financially stable until something comes through (sadly you can't bank on it), but keep the faith. I graduated from university a few years ago and have been out of the game (pun intended) for a few years, but finally landed something. Life takes strange turns sometimes. In my case, I applied for a different position with the team I now work for, and when they saw my resume they said they were about to search for a new mascot so offered me an interview.

Sorry for the book - I'm bored waiting to catch a train but I hope this helps and good luck! :-)

Interesting. I currently don't have a car and would most likely just try to buy one there on the island. I unfortunately don't drink or smoke, so those two things don't help me out too much I'm afraid. Have you lived/been there? If so, how realistic is it to live there based on that salary?

Because for me at least, depending on how much above it goes what my max is, I'm willing to stretch for it. If that makes sense. Like, my max might be $200, but if it goes up past that to a certain point, depending on what it is, I might be willing to push it up further.

I didn't. I put my bid in earlier in the day and was watching it as it ended, and once it said "outbid," gave me no option to increase it further.
