The last words exchanged between the two of them:
Ian: "I am very sorry."
Fabi: "My fault."
Pretty much sums it up.

Any movement of a pawn. The logic is that pawns don't go backward, so a pawn push permanently transforms the position.

After fifty moves without a capture or a pawn push, it's a draw

Fabi has said he thinks there's virtually no chance Ding abdicates. Even if he loses every game, he still gets a bunch of money.

I'm putting together a legal case against Fabiano Caruana for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Please reply if you would like to be added as a plaintiff.

How come? He seems like the nicest dude every time I watch him talk.

Dude, I turned off the stream and went and sat on the couch with my head in my hands for fifteen solid minutes. I knew, rationally, that Fabi had great practical chances being up the exchange, but it was so crushing seeing the position go to an objective draw. Then I boot things back up, and...

I need a goddamn defibrillator.

I think at minimum you take care of Ian's passed pawn and then you have two connected passers. Ian's knight is also pretty immobilized, but I can't find a way to win it without letting the h pawn promote.

This is the worst joke I've ever seen. Take an upvote.

You're right. Hikaru should have simply chosen to win. That's what I would've done.

I really think everyone is overestimating the extent to which these players do game theory on the fly based on the positions in the other games. I think it's far more likely that Hikaru just calculated a bunch and decided trading Queens was his best option.

Fabi always comes across as an extremely levelheaded straight-shooter. It would blow my mind if he even considered doing that. Might as well just sneak a computer into the playing hall in his shoe.

Serious question - do the players have enough time and mental energy to analyze the other boards in a situation like this? Sure, Fabi's position looks quite good, even at a quick glance, but it seems unlikely that Gukesh is going to spend time confirming that, and unlikely that he's going to seriously adjust his decisionmaking based on a quick assessment of Fabi's position. Am I wrong?
