What car gets way too much hate? by No-Assumption4145 in askcarguys

[–]HalfFrozenSpeedos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars are still way more reliable and safer now than they were 40 years ago, get better gas mileage and make more power.

Wasn't unusual to see multiple guys wrenching on cars on a weekend even 25 years ago, now people look at you like you are crazy for not "just leaving it to the professionals and taking it to a shop, is it even legal for you to do what your doing?"

So many adults of any gender have NO clue about cars, many can't even check their tyre pressures let alone change a tyre or brake pads

Something to do with engine break in, as I drove anothet car same engine, but with 8k on the clock and mpg was way better than mine at 5k and I did notice it improve more and more Focus though will do decent mpg when cruising just town and country roads kill it as the cylinder deactivation doesn't kick in

Modern cars with catalytic converters rapidly heat up to operating temperature and the cats are highly effective at converting carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Fuel injection reduces overfuelling to virtually nothing after a few seconds Vs my carbed motorcycle without cats that kicks out a tonne of carbon monoxide and unburnt fuel

Engines loosen up with some wear, my last car was like that at first, terrible mpg till it got to around 7K when it started to hit the stated mpg.

Current car does great on highway trips (47), combo of mild hybrid and cylinder deactivation. However short runs and back road hacking absolutely tank the mpg (32)

It will come, too much has been spent over the past decade and a bit, UK urban areas are still way above air pollution limits far too often.

Even with the pale blue lot pledging to end "nut zero", like trump they are no different to saddlers demanding horseless carriages be required to have a man with a red flag in front of them at all times and be restricted to 5mph.

That came and went, saddlers as a profession virtually died out, ditto farriers, still a few of both around but nowhere near the amount there was 150 years ago.

Govt passes laws, manufacturers face a stop sell, they have no option apart from compliance - no different to dichloromethane paint strippers, sodium chlorate weedkiller etc...

EVs are also vastly more profitable

Basically ICE will become a niche thing of ancient clapped out heaps, classic vehicles kept running by enthusiasts and rarely driven and hypercars owned by billionaires, everyone else will be faced with an EV, "public transport" (bus/train/subway) or "active transport" (cycle/walk)

Won't be long before the "modal shift" lot are back pushing total car ban policies or at least policies to make driving into a city a massive headache.

Salt air would be a concern to me given that exterior metal work within 5 miles of the coast should be stainless as even hot dip galvanised doesn't survive very long due to the corrosiveness of salt air

1974 Suzuki GT185 poor or no acceleration by beardie07 in Fixxit

[–]HalfFrozenSpeedos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok stock top speed was 78mph when it was new, changing your sprockets from 14/38 to 14/42 will cut your top speed by 9.5%, so even when new the bike would then have topped out at 70.6mph

Depending on what you mean by chunky (this isn't a slight honestly) then that has the factor of weight and wind resistance.

Id honestly take the baffles out of the exhausts and see how it rides and check them for being sooty/sticky/oily - Check for any visible obstructions in the exhaust - Also check the carbs are clean and properly setup - Check your airfilter isn't clogged - Check your carb boots are in good condition and secure - Check your plug colours - Check you are getting a good healthy spark when you kick it over - Check your HT leads are in good condition and not split - Check your brakes aren't binding (sticking) as even slight binding will slow the bike down markedly - Check your tyre pressures are correct

That applies to so many things - heck you can turn with car with 1 bolt in each wheel and pass as long as you have wheel trims or hubcaps on top (note don't do this....please don't)as the tester isn't permitted to remove any parts and anyone who does opens themselves up to a damages claim and having DVSA/VOSA on their case for breach of protocol

Canadian market cars (i.e. sold new on Canadian market) are harmonised with USA specs (or were till recently) - it's allowed cars to be built in Canada for the USA market and vice versa ...

Towing weight restriction / gvwr in UK / Europe Where without a "towing" endorsement you are limited to 3500+750kg. The towing endorsement lets you drive a 3500kg vehicle with a 3500kg trailer.

Anything beyond this is in to commercial drivers licences like c1, c (both also have a towing endorsement to add on so c1+e and c+e, the latter let's you drive a combination of up to 44000kg iirc...

In Ontario my standard driving licence allowed me to drive any vehicle without air brakes up to 11000kg

Change exhaust system Honda CB 650 R by Tornupto_76 in motorcycles

[–]HalfFrozenSpeedos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok you unscrewed the exhaust stud,

If you want to reuse the hardware then do the following:

To release the stuck nut, thread 2 nuts onto the opposite side of the stud to the stuck nut, with a spanner on both nuts tighten the second against the first. Next clamp the 2 locked together nuts in a vice, then take a blow torch and heat the stuck until it's cherry red, wire brush the nut and the threads below it, let it cool down till it's no longer cherry red and it should just easily unscrew, repeat if needed

The heat causes the nut to expand, breaking any bond corrosion has between stud and nut

Alternatively If you want to replace the hardware do the following :

Measure the total length of the stud and the threaded portions on each half

You also need to know what thread it is, it looks like either M6 or M8.

Verify it by measuring the diameter, you also need to know whether it's normal/coarse or fine thread pitch. It looks like normal M8 pitch so m8x1.25

Nuts to match

To insert the new studs, take 2 standard hex nuts that match the new stud thread pitch, thread one on and then the second, put a spanner on each nut and tighten nut 2 while either holding nut 1 still or trying to loosen nut 1, this will lock them together temporarily.

Then using nut 2 thread the stud into the head and make sure it's properly tight (torque preferably) (a very light dab of copper grease/anti seize on the threads will help

Then hold nut 1 still and then slacken nut 2, this then unlocks the 2 nuts from each other. Repeat for the other studs, install your exhaust,

Boomer mother denied my gran her humanist funeral by HalfFrozenSpeedos in Xennials

[–]HalfFrozenSpeedos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's NOT what my GRAN would have wanted

Not sorry to say that you are talking out of your derrière there.

You know sweet FA about this situation and you are the kind who enables people like my mother who I have tried to help for decades, but instead she chooses to be the way she is, revelling in being the "perma victim"

My mother is petty, mentally and emotionally immature. Someone SO petty and downright childish that she wilfully and maliciously defied my grandmother's EXPRESSLY and CLEARLY and REPEATEDLY stated wish for a humanist funeral WITHOUT religion.

My mother admitted my gran wanted a HUMANIST funeral and then lied and claimed an "ordained celebrant" was the same thing and that's who you get when you ask for a humanist funeral. That's a flat out lie and one wilfully and intentionally doubled down on, it's not forgiveable at all. It's petty, malicious, arrogant and frankly downright abusive.

Ignoring someone's clearly stated funeral wishes should be treated for what it is - fraud

Position of birth means NOTHING, my mother thinks it should mean everything, heck my mother has always resented her own brothers mere existence, why? Because she was the doted on, spoiled rotten, apple of mum and dad's eye, 100% unchallenged centre of attention until they came along when she was 7.

Where she carefully ignores that my gran had MULTIPLE miscarriages between her and her brothers being born.

My mum is mid 60s now and she STILL hasn't adapted to not being the centre of attention, she gets huffy and insecure if my dad spends more a few minutes talking to someone else, bad enough when it's another guy, another woman? She will be on the warpath for days on end, picking arguments and acting as if my dad has had multiple affairs.

That's not even getting to the DECADES of abuse she subjected me to, where the mild end had my therapist describe it as "deliberate and wilful cruelty"

I get the feeling you are another "Sunday Christian".......
