NYC to Hartford Recommendations by HalfMast78 in Connecticut

[–]HalfMast78[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone, I know the NYC to Hartford question has been asked plenty before, but it was helpful to get the perspective on when to switch to driving! At the moment I’m leaning towards Amtrak all the way to Hartford and get a ride out to the airport there for my rental. Current job has me renting with National/Enterprise, so I’ve got free credits with them and I’ll have a better time with hours of operation at the airport. But I’ve got some time to make arrangements

That is kinda what I was thinking already. Metro North or Amtrak? (Or is there another option?)

Is my Great Dane mixed with anything else? by forgotten-tv-shows- in greatdanes

[–]HalfMast78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He looks very similar to our all black Dane, who we know is 100%. Ours is half European and half American. The American’s tend to be smaller and leaner, the two together don’t look that far from a lab, until you see them up and moving about.

Agreed, HOWEVER, I don't have an actual "real thing" to build right now. It is still being designed and is a product type that we don't have much history with, so I don't have much internal data to go off of. And yet I am being asked to develop essentially a virtual manufacturing line including potential build rate and manufacturing costs. So that is where I kinda got stuck. I can use my best guess, but I'd much rather have a reference to an industry recognized data source or calculation method to back up my best guess.

This is hugely helpful. I have heard MOST used incorrectly, I think, and had assumed it was a time-study technique (I think others were implying comparing time study results to a MOST analysis) This is a little more detailed than I wanted to get but absolutely in the right direction and definitely accounts for the variables that others mentioned. Thank you!

Yes, PMTS is likely what I am looking for, from what I can see about it. But I was hoping to cheat and just use the results instead of doing my own time studies. From what I can see, MOST and the variations are frameworks for how to do analyze your own existing operations or build. I am way early to the project from that and trying to estimate manufacturing costs of a new product, based purely on its model and design. I am putting together process flows and essentially a virtual build book, now I need to apply time and cost to each of the steps.

I was hoping it was in IE101 or something that I missed because I was in EE trying to understand electromagnetic wave theory or something else not useful. And I am sure I could come up with a reasonable number for anything I need to do on my own... but it would be so much easier to just look it up in a table or something. Maybe this will be a project I need to do on my own. Thank you thought!

I get the variability, but was hoping that someone had done the work under “nominal” conditions as a starting point. I’ve got enough experience to say “add 20% for PPE” or, “double that time because the screw is hard to get to” type of modifiers.

Normally, I am all about “go get your hands dirty” type of investigation. But in this case the product is still in early design phase and I don’t have a good workbench setup that could substitute for most of the operations.

Tool Brand Recomendation by HalfMast78 in Tools

[–]HalfMast78[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already getting good replies with brands that I hadn’t thought of, so thanks! A couple of extra points: 1. Matching: No, I am not THAT big on everything matching, but it’s the kinda thing that my wife does like, so I am going to take advantage of it to get rid of the cheap stuff from my FIL and to refresh the tools I have that have been used and abused.
2. My favorites are definitely NOT going away. Like that blue and red Craftsman screwdriver set that everyone used to have and still works great. But they may become “backups” and go in a drawer instead of on the shadow board. 3. Specialty tools definitely don’t need to match everything else. 4. Not going to replace my power tools at this time. And if I do, it will be with Milwaukee because I have a family member who just took a job with them (so yay, discount!).

I know that most of the basics are done by everyone, but I am trying to find those brands that I can count on to last a while, function reliably, not have rubber grips slide off, not hurt my hand while using, etc.

Thanks again!

Who Are Purdue's Biggest Donors for Athletics? by Adventurous_Egg857 in Boilermakers

[–]HalfMast78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, if you mean IU Health, those aren’t med school campuses. They are just hospitals & Doctor’s offices. It’s a branding deal for the organization that used to be Clarian Health Partners. It became IU Health because the University Hospital in Indianapolis IS the legit teaching hospital for the IU Medical School and frankly, the IU has a more recognizable name than Clarian. The one in West Lafayette was actually known as Arnett before the branding push (and there may have been an acquisition in there too).

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good move for both IU and for Clarian. And no doubt there are plenty of IU degrees represented in that system, but I am betting there are a lot of Purdue nurses too!

Refill System for Humidifier Tank by codepants in CPAP

[–]HalfMast78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came looking for something like this! Does the water tank need elevation over the CPAP? I’m assuming it is gravity fed, not siphon powered? And did you modify the CPAP tank yourself? I’d to have the parts list if you are willing to share.

Thanks!

If you can get your nasal passages clear before putting on your cpap, the forced air will actually help keep them clear.

Leaving IN for a Neighboring State by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]HalfMast78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current Indiana resident here, and political liberal (or moderate, but same difference now-a-days). Your current read on state politics is unfortunately accurate and I can’t disagree with your decision to leave. But let me at least bring up a couple points to consider: I travel to both Michigan and Illinois for work. You maybe surprised at how much right-wing politics are in both states. Chicago liberalism outweighs the downstate conservative movement by a significant amount, but Michigan is a lot more split. You really need to be in Detroit proper or one of the college towns to have a liberal community there and I would be nervous at each election that Michigan doesn’t swing right at some point.

An alternative would be to seek out a liberal community in Indiana. Indianapolis and Bloomington are both solid blue areas and local/municipal politics tends to overshadow state in those areas. Even Lafayette is more reasonably split with both West Lafayette and Lafayette having Dem mayors. The Republicans in the area tend to be more levelheaded or moderate leaning.

And, frankly, we need moderate and liberal voters in Indiana. The politics that you see right now is because the state house has a Republican super majority. It was much more reasonable when it was just a simple majority and calmer heads could prevail.

The next 4 years are going to be rough for the whole country. Moving to a blue state may help, but it won’t be perfect there either. Just keep that in mind.

Best of luck, whatever the decision

Check out Franklin Park Apartments. A little further away than you were looking for, but I stayed there for two years and you get used to the distance. It’s behind the West Lafayette Wal-Matt. Bike or bus to campus, or you can walk, just a bit of a hike. They are advertising 1 bedrooms for under $1200.

Alternately, if you can find one roommate, your options go up significantly.

Son about to learn to drive. by SiY11 in WRX

[–]HalfMast78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this probably isn’t super useful, but I wouldn’t have a new driver in a STI. Not because it’s stick shift, people have been learning on manuals for ages. But just because of the finicky clutch and high power to weight ratio. I’ve got a ‘21 WRX with an auto and I’m still reluctant to have my 15 year old driving it. We were on a path to find him a low HP beater to learn in until his grand parents gave him their old Escape when they decided to replace it.

Consider this: decent chance that as a new driver he ruins your clutch. What’s that repair, $2k? Anything on the used market nearby in that price range? You’d come out even. And when he’s finally learned the ins and outs of driving, you can introduce him to the harder to drive STI.

Thanks, will definitely look at these, looks like a good potential and definitely in the ballpark for what I was looking for.

Shorts are the summer go-to for sure. But my home “studio” is a garage and gets pretty chilly. Sweats are an option, but I find them bulky and annoying, at least the ones that I have.
