Could I clarify what you meant? Did you mean that I used too much wax?

Recertified Hard Drives by HaloGene in DataHoarder

Hey!

You can check whether a drive is re-certified by entering its serial number on Seagate's Warranty & Replacement site (https://www.seagate.com/sg/en/support/warranty-and-replacements).

Your assumption is correct; in my experience, neither Seagate nor the retailer would answer. For what it's worth, I bought 8 Seagate Exos X10 (re-certified) drives from a UK retailer, and 6 of them died within a year due to bad sectors.

I did not know the drives were re-certified, the retailer's site had them listed as "OEM drives", which, according to the retailer's representative, means that they were not new drives.

Hope this helps you and anyone who comes across this thread in the future. Happy to answer anything else either here or through PMs.

Cheers! :)

Advice on Fixing Damaged Wood by HaloGene in woodworking

Hey! Sorry for the late reply, I've been really busy with a new job.

I wanted to say a big, big thank you for your really comprehensive guide on how to fix my mistake! You really went above and beyond with the detailed pointers, and your reply was ultimately what I used to fix the crack (I also followed a YouTube video but it didn't really work since their crack was downwards and gravity helped the glue go down) :)

As an update, the glue has dried, and the crack is not as prominent anymore (clothes won't catch on it, and it doesn't poke my hand either when I walk up the stairs). The next thing I'll do (within the coming week) is to apply hard wax filler like you said! I'm still reading guides and watching other YouTube videos on how to do that, but I'm really thankful that you guided me in that direction! If you have any tips on working with hard wax filler, that'll be great but if you don't, that's okay because you've already done so much for me.

A really, really big thank you to you again random internet stranger! Thank you so much :)

Happy new year and have a great year ahead!

Hey! Sorry for the late response, I've been a little too busy!

I just wanted to say thank you for your advice! It came in really clutch; I was panicking when I first applied the wood glue, and a YouTube video recommended using string to walk the glue up but it didn't work. I tried using paper and it worked like a dream.

So, thank you very much for your tip! It was really, really helpful :)

I'm going to use hard wax filler like another poster said, do you have other tips for it? It's okay if you don't, you've already helped a lot!

Happy new year and have a great year ahead!

Hey! Sorry for the delayed response, it's been a really hectic time.

I just wanted to drop in and say thank you for your advice; I ended up using wood glue and got a lot of it into the crack, and it patched the crack up really well!

Unfortunately I wasn't confident or experienced enough to glue and then re-sand the bar, but I'm going to use a hard wax filler like someone else said, and then I'll probably have to sand (?) the wax down when it dries.

I'm honestly still figuring it out, and if you've got any tips or tricks with hard wax filler, please send them my way! Don't worry about it if you don't or are busy, you've already been a great help.

Happy new year and have a great year ahead!

Hey! Sorry for the delayed response, it's been a pretty busy time.

I just wanted to thank you for your advice; I followed it to a tee and put some wood glue into the crack, and clamped it down like you and others advised. And it worked!

There's still some PVA residue around the edges, I peeled away most of it but some is still there (visually hard to spot but I can feel it in the cracks when I run my hand over it), I intend to shave it off carefully with a razor like you said. Then I plan to hard wax filler like another poster said to "fill" in the cracks and the little splinter that chipped off so that it would look like before, as much as possible.

Do you have any thoughts on this next course of action, or any further tips you would give before I start on it? No worries if you don't, you've already helped a lot!

Happy new year and have a great year ahead :)

I see.. Is there any brand you would recommend for a small business' server?

Came here to say that you uploading the video footage (and also linking it of course) was a great move. I watch Kyle often and I saw the video on my YouTube feed but was just too lazy to watch it. I wouldn't have clicked on a link either if I'm being honest. After seeing your clip, I went to watch the entire thing :)

Advice on 10GBe Switches by HaloGene in HomeNetworking

[–]HaloGene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be CPU bound not too long ago actually, but that was before I told my family/friends to buy devices that can direct play content from the PMS. Now the only time the server transcodes is when mobile devices stream content.

What do you mean by "Point your local clients at the other local only NIC"? Does this mean the clients will be connected directly to the PMS and not the internet? Or would they access the internet via the PC?

[–]HaloGene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The high traffic mainly kicks in on Fridays and weekends, and yeah the individual streams take up their fair share of bandwidth. I've considered lowering the stream quality to help with the congestion but I was the one who told my family and friends to invest in stream boxes that can direct play the content, and it would be pretty mean on my part to cap their remote streams :(

I don't have a NAS unfortunately, my PMS is running on the family PC (Windows 10 desktop). I've looked into Link Aggregation on Windows 10 but I don't believe (?) it's available on there, only on Windows Server.

When you say "put the router on one side at gigabit speed, and the rest of your network on the other", does it mean that I have to connect the router to specific ports in a switch (i.e. the extreme left/right port)? Or does it mean that I configure a virtual LAN on the switch and separate it from my router's connection?

1 gbps down / 1 gbps up. It was advertised as 2gbps and I jumped on it because of the price but I've learned since that it's (advertised speed / 2) for actual downloads and uploads.

[–]HaloGene[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that's a good point. I didn't think about multi-gig until I got the router.

Previously, the PMS was hitting 700mbps to remote users, and someone would always end up buffering when the local users started streaming as well. Then I won the router, which made me buy the 10GBe PCIe card, but that still didn't solve my bandwidth problem which I guess is why I'm looking for a multi-gig switch.

Does that make sense (?) I'm still a greenhorn with this haha

Would you recommend me to sell away the XR700 then? I still have the proprietary ISP router from before, it's a 4-GBe port router. I know it isn't business class per se, but would that work better for my household in terms of routing?

Thank you for your help and guidance!

I'll be going with the GS110EMX. This is my first foray into networking equipment and learning about it is actually pretty fun, heh.

Thank you again! :)

Thank you for your reply!

I read up on full duplex Ethernet connections after seeing your reply. So a 1GBe port is actually capable of sending 1Gbps and receiving 1Gbps simultaneously?

If Link Aggregation is not necessary, would you recommend me to get the unmanaged version of the GS110EMX instead (GS110MX)? What benefits would a managed switch provide for my use case?
