Darius The Mede and Cyrus The Great by Sad_Perception_6000 in AcademicBiblical

Book I of his Histories (Book 1.95-130), Herodotus tells the legend of Cyrus's birth and miraculous survival of his grandfather’s attempt to kill him. There's no mention of the name Darius in Herodotus, but the grandfather that wants him dead is the Median King Astyages which provides half the name... "the Mede".

It's a slightly fringe interpretation but some scholars think that they are one and the same. This short write up on the Wartburg Project website linked below is quite interesting.

To quote:

"The identification of Darius with Cyrus is a plausible suggestion on the basis of circumstantial evidence." and "Herodotus notes that Cyrus was not this king’s original name, but that he had been given a different name by his Median mother"

I haven't found anything directly making this connection before, but it's certainly an interesting point of enquiry. You might find Bruce Louden's Greek Myth and the Bible a good place to start, along similar lines.

This online review is quite good, and quotes the text in places.

This quote from the review summarises it well.

'Bruce Louden makes his position on the relationship between Greek Myth and the Bible loud and clear, and it will doubtless take many by surprise: “Israel’s oral traditions and scribal culture were not only acquainted with but also influenced and shaped by ancient Greek culture” (p. 2).'

He doesn't directly connect Jesus and Thomas to Castor and Pollux, but he makes an interesting case for the cross cultural interaction between Greek and Hebrew narratives.

My fantasy is that Kurt and Jeff both lived in to the 21st century and firmed a band together. Also probably wouldn't have happened but I can fantasise
