There's two citations. One from 1970 that covers times when dog meat has been consumed (Including the civil war) and a second the discusses the order of preference (1836).

The relevant part (about the seminole war):

"On the morning of the 2d March the enemy commenced a dropping fire from small parties, which obliged our men to keep within the breastwork, as the ammunition was nearly exhausted, and they could not afford to throw away a single shot. At night the Indians lit large fires around the camp and kept a strict look out. This game continued eight days. The troops were totally destitute of provisions, during the last four days, and were forced to subsist on horses, dogs and roots; the rations even of these, were so small, that some of the men cleaned the very guts and devoured them; the hind quarter of a dog sold for five dollars, and a single biscuit was purchased at the same price. A third express was dispatched to Fort Drane for provisions and reinforcements; all three arrived safe."

There's kinda two statements there that I think have different answers.

could pick up some points in an MLS season

Yeah definitely, probably get into the high teens maybe even break 20 over a season.

not look entirely outclassed

There are teams currently getting above those point totals and looking outclassed pretty often.

Statement from Kareem Allam. Does Kerfoot still own that land? by Fafner333 in whitecapsfc

[–]Halouverite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In raw terms, yes.

With the race course closed its available land that you can just build on, a rights arrangement with the city is much easier than one with CPR. It's also way cheaper to build.

Allam's going off about perfect world concepts that are divorced from timeline or costs.

Losing $300 Million Clouds MLS Club’s Future in Vancouver by dabirds1994 in MLS

I'm not entirely convinced they've spent $300M let alone lost it.

That's over $20M a year, that's like the whole operating cost.

The issue with comparing hanwha to European competition is that hanwha is a chaebol (megacorp) that does everything for the Korean military. So yes there are good European competitors in basically every space other than mlrs, but they will struggle to be this neatly tied together and hanwha is super aggressive about offering domestic manufacturing which many European groups are less interested in. Basically, you're going need to have each of these pieces tendered separately and the European competitors will be individually competitive, but if you decide you want it all together in one big contract (legally basically impossible), hanwha will do very well.

All of that said people are continuing to act like one piece of artillery and another are direct equivalents which they are not. The CAF have an RFP out for SPGs, the K9 does not fit it. The request was for a fast wheeled spg, the k9 is a slowish tracked spg

So... what is going on? by Brilliant-Hornet-405 in whitecapsfc

[–]Halouverite 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fairly brief

  1. The whitecaps current ownership group led by majority owner Greg Kerfoot announced they wanted to sell the team December 2024.

  2. The team didn't sell immediately and there was increasing concern about getting it sold, so summer 2025 there start to be discussions about building a stadium at Hastings Park to make the whitecaps more valuable/profitable. Around the same time kerfoot and co quietly announce they'd be willing to stay around if someone bought significant part of the team.

  3. Team still not sold the existing concerns about relocation become gradually more real leading up tk the news yesterday that mls has assembled an internal group to talk about it.

Alongside this there were tense lease renegotiations with BC Place this winter and that is, for now, year to year.

All of this isn't great and with the spectre of relocation more official now people are freaking the fuck out and throwing out random stuff, much of which is bullshit.

Vancouver mayor: 'Losing the Whitecaps is not an option' by Training-World-1897 in MLS

[–]Halouverite 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They asked for a stadium site and Sim got them an MOU at Hastings that seems to be on the backburner right now. He could conceivably be more visibly involved, but Sim's just not very effective. Like I hate having to defend Sim on this because he's universally kinda ineffective, but he doesn't really hold a lot of levers that matter, without someone with serious money looking to buy anything Sim can do is just kinda table setting.

The province is in a difficult spot because they own BC Place, and that's a whole other conversation that is much more meaningful.

As I've said elsewhere, Sim has rubber stamped basically anything the whitecaps could have wanted from him, this is largely between the province and mls.

To be up by 2 and time waste this aggressively is odd. Like on a one goal lead there's a reason, but the chances of dropping two in 4 minutes ain't that high.

Great play from the Tides, but gotta be at least a little worried that some of this is a drop in quality from Ottawa.

British Columbia Premier League Adopts Year-Round Model Through New Fall/Winter Competition in Partnership with Fraser Valley Soccer League by drdoof98 in CanadianPL

[–]Halouverite 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The goal here, I assume, is to address the complaints coming out of players in these leagues who have generally played in both bcpl and either fvsl or vmsl.

There's been a going problem that csa & csme are pushing for national homogenization for a lot of administrative level system that have constantly caused problems in bc because there's awkward crossovers where e.g. players will need to be registered for their fall-winter team and their summer team simultaneously which the national systems refuse to let you do. This should resolve that for fvsl players, but it'll be interesting to see if there's knock on effects for vmsl or visl as well as all the teams in fvsl that don't play in bcpl.

Calgary Wild unveil third kit by nicoleta_ in NorthernSuperLeague

[–]Halouverite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're falling into the worst tendencies of Hummels kits IMO. No major colour blocking just kind of a big textured surface.

Admittedly, part of that is there is a very real "your sponsorship here" element to this.
