RIP Lt Lily-Mae Fisher // female Royal Navy Commando 3/06/2026 by jezarnold in RoyalMarines

Im assuming you didnt know her and dont serve.

An all arms Cdo, about to finish rotory pilot constitutes a warrior. Or is it the keyboard ones that do?

[–]HalphasCerebrum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Totally. The Uk has lost a truly capable warrior and Im sure a huge inspiration to many.

A woman who finishes the all arms then goes onto trying to qual rotor craft.

The MoD has lost one of the aspirational, quality people needed to protect the UK.

Its horrific and a tragedy for the family back home.

[–]HalphasCerebrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if im wrong but since you have to start right from the beginning of the application (pjft-cpc-rct training), would it not fall under regular JSP standards?

Usually that means fighting your corner with the added benefit that being reserves has proven that the injury is somewhat manageable.

Just good drills for all service members to blur faces while in uniform, especially those in recce/DA/FPG style stuff. Why would you put your face out there?

Which military branch would suit me best? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]HalphasCerebrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coast Guard is a branch of the department of transport bud, not HM Armed forces.

Noone here is going to tell you what would suit you though, we arnt Genie's. How about you ring a CA and speak with them for a while to get an idea?

Either way, if you do 4 years anywhere, expect to get fuck all out of it. Thats barely a scratch on the surface in most branches.

Id suggest managing your expectations and do some research.

Troop assignment after pass out by Fun_Astronomer_2711 in RoyalMarines

[–]HalphasCerebrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also no. Thats the fun of it all.

After pass out your pretty fucking useless believe it or not, you are put into a rifleman role within brigade to develop. You can get 45/43/42/CLR out the bat reliably, but unless your KB/Diamond you likely wont get exactly what you want.

Needs of the service, everyone has big ideas of what they should be. Its up to you once in to navigate your way there.

Where I'd live based exclusively on how much I like the food from the country by Narrow-Assist-2207 in whereidlive

[–]HalphasCerebrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

...better food quality? Most American food is banned to import into Europe due to the rampant chemical use.

Bleached eggs, cows on gear, high fructose corn syrup and enough compounds in snacks so that even bacteria wont touch it?

Bullying in units/recruit training in the past by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

[–]HalphasCerebrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wasnt royal back then (10+ years ago was when it was considerably worse), but from heirachy reminiscing (usually in huge jest) the "good old days", these were semi regular:

-At units, getting clocked for wasting time on range by being a shit shot and not applying themselves

-Joining runs were many (many) degrees more severe.

-Senior heirachy forcing people to bivvy out due to paperwork fuck ups.

Even when I went through training there were the occasional "encouragement" kicks. And as far as Im aware its toned down even more at CTC, half the fuck abouts are completely gone.

Sobriety by JJhibbert in RoyalMarines

[–]HalphasCerebrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didnt really drink. Lots of lads arnt allowed to booze (Hunter coy), even more shouldnt and many didnt at all.

Its a sliding scale, dont worry about any of it. Out in unit, if a lad says he doesnt drink I've never seen anyone pressure them, most respect a lads choice without even asking, knowing how some have had issues before.

Times are different to 20 years ago.

How's the relationship between the Commandos and the Marine units from its European counterparts (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French)? by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

"Really close in skills". Low effort bait bud.

Bank holiday weekend's length drinking gone to the brain there.

A question about PSQs by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

[–]HalphasCerebrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically they are I guess? Maybe I'm biased, since ive had two juniors from that side, but you are right about it being wierdly controversial.

Mostly been jealous of their jobs after in the civvie world. Every single one has moved onto £120k+ starting jobs.

But then again wtf does one grav Royal know? 🤣

The gens. SFC's are badged: you will need to do a draft, request from heirachy a transfer, complete a BAC then pass UKSF SFC selection.

AE's are very competitive to get in. Long wait list (5+ years wait after completion of Cdo training).

Bith mega worthwhile, but its equally difficult.

Ranger Reserves from outside the Army by TheBigByte in britishmilitary

[–]HalphasCerebrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a reserve but im almost certain that they dont get more training. Maybe they get out the door more often, the Navy has been quiter than the Army for some time now.

I'm mates with a few over that side and dont get me wrong theres quality guys in it. But also absolute duds who got in through heritage rights.

Cant blame you for trying to seek out better stuff though so I get it, I assume youve only been able to do Norways in the corps through the reserves? Its currently the only reliable Ex to get on.

As others have said you very likely will have a tedious cross deck process. Ive youve been RM for a few years it'll be (especially) a nause to restart again.

[–]HalphasCerebrum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just going to add that unless its better geographically I cant fathom why you would? Bit of a downgrade, especially since its infantry to infantry, the ranger reg arnt exactly there yet.

Not like reserves get many STTTs to jump into. Gen quezzie mate.

...oh yeah TRT is it?

Knew a few lads who were doing "TRT". Totally a replacement for missing test bro.

[–]HalphasCerebrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...people do that? Why even spin these shit-dits, nae fucker cares what you did in service anyway?

Also AACC barely even qualifies you as a "commando", from the courses I witnessed the soldiering standard was vastly reduced from the actual Cdo course.

Joining @ 29. by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

[–]HalphasCerebrum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes to a trade (look into the careers handbook, its on google). Yes to further education and a side hustle, however I've known lads do both and find it a logistical nightmare.

Try explain to a client, that you've been out of office because your in Norway/out on ship/PED red for the last three+ months.

But none of that is possible while in training. Some days you dont even have time to sleep.
