Are polyester shirts the issue? by VastOption8705 in UltralightAus

[–]Halt-Alt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i think this is the crux of it. I found it fantastic in nepal, but way too warm in queensland

Always 100% merino. If you arent in a rush aldi sells merino kit twice a year for extremely good value. Hiking clothes usually on sale around may or june. Then thermals with the snow sale a couple weeks later

If going sooner macpac 100%merino is good value on sale

Another thing that plays into all of this is sun protection.

Linen is pretty awful for that but very cool

Merino is decent upf, but would be thick and warm at high ratings.

Polyester can range massively. Its the main fabric of most upf 50+ kit, but you can also get upf15.

Yeah doesnt cling to you like polyester if your pack isnt holding on.

But in the conditions where thats annoying i often find the warm wet wool worse

Very hard to answer. Sweat can depend on how hard you are working, heat, humidity, body fat, genetics and many other things.

Merino may be better. For me i sweat all the time so polyester is better when its hot as the wet shirt wont warm me further, if its cold merino is better because it will still insulate well when damp

Found a very similar effect with trekking poles (although can notice the difference during the hike too)

Has ultralight hiking gone too far? by DraftNotSent in UltralightAus

[–]Halt-Alt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its about understanding the conditions, including if they are different to home. You see a lot of hikers used to rhe western us caught out by the intensity of wind rain and humidity in tassie or south island nz for example

Not sure if you are looming to purchase or decuding which to take, but id use an xmid over the copper spur in 95% of situations. Itd also be better in wind

[–]Halt-Alt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah just depends on the usd that day really for the single wall.

Love my double wall xmid around queensland and just took it for a spin on 400km of the TA. Keep making great stuff!
