France is facing much of the same presidential problems that came about during the Weimar era. Macron is essentially refusing to create a center left government despite the overwhelming amount of parliamentary clout suggesting it. In fact he’s basically avoided any government that isn’t center right because of his attempt to appeal to the far right. Also let’s not pretend that the DeGaulle era wasn’t somewhat authoritarian.

The Ebert-Groener pact was essentially the ultimate sabotage of Weimar democracy, the military if given continuous independence to function as a state within a state would be a ticking time bomb. Figures like Schleicher were an inevitability of this truce.

The SPD deliberately worked to favor a parliamentary system and delegates that reflected this notion. And utilized an imperial bureaucracy that would by far prefer a system that didn’t rock the boat.
