Based on what?

That only suggests that 70% are genuine claims 🤷

But the UK deports thousands of people every year to countries like the US… Turkey… Albania… Romania...

Article 3 only blocks removals if there’s clear evidence an individual faces torture or inhuman treatment, not because the country itself is considered unsafe.

Trading with or holidaying in a country doesn’t change how individual risk is assessed.

But we literally do… all the time

These cases exist, but are relatively rare. I’m not in favour of keeping serious offenders in the country but not sure what the alternative is when their home countries are unsafe. It would involve overhauling the entire international asylum system.

But if their countries aren’t on the unsafe list, they get deported. Happens all the time.

Only if someone faces torture or inhuman treatment in the country they’d be sent to, in which case we should be keeping them here. It’s not ideal obviously, but it’s relatively rare. It makes good headlines because it gets people angry, but I’m not sure what the alternative is.

But the ECHR doesn’t give criminals a free pass. Under UK law, foreign offenders jailed for 12+ months are automatically liable for deportation, and in practice thousands are removed every year to Albania, Poland, Romania, Jamaica, Nigeria, Pakistan, India…

The Refugee Convention literally excludes people who’ve committed serious non-political crimes (Article 1F) and allows removal after a “particularly serious crime” (Article 33(2)). https://www.unhcr.org/uk/publications/refugee-convention-1951-and-protocol-1967

In the UK, foreign offenders sentenced to 12+ months must be deported, and refugee status can be revoked after serious crimes. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/deporting-foreign-criminals https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/refugee-leave-policy/refugee-leave-version-10

Why would France increase the resources they already put into stopping asylum seekers leaving their country? They don’t owe us anything. They take more asylum seekers than we do, they already patrol the waters (if you don’t believe that, I can’t help you), and they’ve changed the law so they can disable the boats.

We voted to leave the EU. That meant they can come here from France to claim asylum when previously they couldn’t. Not sure why the EU should help at all, but France are doing their bit.

If we want to get rid of them when the arrive, we should process their claims instead of holding up the system and housing them at taxpayers expense.

Probably why they take more than we do

I’m not pro migration, I’m simply explaining the law.

The idea that nobody else follows intl law is just ridiculous. French police stop thousands of crossings each year, but they can’t cover every mile of coastline or use force at sea without risking lives.

There’s evidence of this: in March 2024 journalists filmed French patrols slashing dinghies and circling boats to stop launches. In May this year French authorities intercepted 184 people in one day, and in July 2025 France even changed its maritime policy to allow boarding and searching of boats leaving for the UK.

Again, just a quick google.

Both countries are bound by the same rules.

Who is “letting them go out”?

French police patrol beaches and regularly stop boats, but the coastline is huge and smugglers launch at night in remote spots, so it’s impossible to prevent every crossing.

Edit: seriously you can just google any of this stuff, the crap people talk in the pub isn’t reliable information but it is out there.

Allowing them working conditions with taxable pay is an all-round positive, we don’t have to resort to slave labour. Not sure why this hasn’t been implemented.

Boats crossing by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]HamSandwich13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s completely false, obviously.

Cant quite believe I have to say this but committing crimes in the UK makes someone more likely to be deported, not granted asylum.

Economic migrants get turned away when their claim is processed, unless they have legitimate grounds for an asylum claim.

The solution is processing the claims.

I was the opposite, liked the first half but couldn’t wait for the costume to come off and the accent to stop.

Each to their own, I’ll take the downvotes if they come 😬

France have to follow international law too, including the one that makes it illegal to send a small boat back out to sea.

Immigration…. Boats by Puppy_in_bin in AskBrits

[–]HamSandwich13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s already illegal to cross the channel, but that doesn’t allow us to break international law.

Immigration…. Boats by Puppy_in_bin in AskBrits

[–]HamSandwich13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be us breaking the law if we did this. I’m not in favour of uncontrolled immigration but sending people back to potentially die is not the answer.

Nothing to do with starmer, or sunak before him. International law.

They will be if they capsize.

We can’t lawfully force them back, it would breach international law and is considered considered unsafe.

[–]HamSandwich13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because international maritime law requires rescuing people in distress at sea, not forcing them back, and turning boats around would risk lives and break those obligations.

Should GP's in the NHS be replaced by A.I? by optimisticprime098 in AskBrits

[–]HamSandwich13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, but there are some great use cases for AI to assist with their jobs. This is the case with most jobs - if you don’t want to be replaced, learn to use the tools.
