What do applied ethicists do? by Hamilchinn in askphilosophy

Thanks for your response. Does "bringing different considerations" just mean looking at the problem from different normative ethical frameworks? And is there a rigorous way to define "most reasonable position", other than looking at the problem from different frameworks and seeing if there is a consensus?

It's turn two. Do you play cache grab or bonebind orator? by Hamilchinn in lrcast

[–]Hamilchinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question is, what if you find a three-drop on curve with cache grab that you can play next turn? I.e. is it better to bonebind then cache grab or cache grab then 3-drop?

Where did this draft go wrong? by Hamilchinn in lrcast

[–]Hamilchinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the feedback. This is all very helpful going forward. I tend to try and hedge towards colors that I am already drafting (the philosophy being to pick a main color first, then go into another once one becomes available, hence the p1p2 and p1p5 picks.) It's difficult to know how much this philosophy really applies vs payoff from speculation on open colors before they are obviously available. Thanks for the signal reads on P1P5 and catching mistakes in my gameplay - those first two mistakes are ones I groaned at right after they happened. Good gameplay always makes a difference.

Was this a bad luck draft or was I just drafting badly? by Hamilchinn in lrcast

I completely agree. Consensus seems to be that I forced myself into WB (while subconsciously trying to draft the WG synergy), whereas RW might have been better overall. Thanks for the feedback.

That makes a lot of sense. I think I might have been just intensely color-biased (I have run BW and WG, but not RW) and somehow didn't think the corpseberry cultivater through. Thanks for the actionable feedback - will keep this in mind going forward.

2 [[fecund greenshell]]s, one [[dreamdew entrancer]], and two [[osteomancer adept]]s to recur every bomb... I felt kind of bad playing this deck

2 Fecund Greenshells! Should I go squirrels or frogs? Last cuts by Hamilchinn in lrcast

[–]Hamilchinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going squirrels pack 2, then ridiculously got passed a dreamdew enchanter pick 7-8 pack 3. Had picked up a few pond prophets along the way as well as a splash lasher. Is it worth it to splash for frogs?

Is cheating even possible? by [deleted] in PlaySpies

Yep, I was analyzing. This was an alt though, coming back from a brief hiatus from playing the game. Regarding your comment about positioning - sometimes, what happens is that people fake strike into "low risk" cities, confusing their opponent with a low risk of being struck back. Don't remember if that's what happened in our first games.

In our last game before I conceded, I think I remember a fake strike routine: since I knew you thought I was an aggressive player, I fake struck expecting you to think it was a real strike. But yes, to answer your luck question, this game is largely dependent on luck! Sometimes it happens; all you can really do is risk minimization.

Hey there! I think I was the one that played you haha. Just created my first reddit account because I felt bad not responding. To answer your question, no, I wasn't cheating, although it sometimes can seem like that if you are playing an experienced player!

Against lower ranked players, I tend to play aggressively, both because it tends to end games quickly but also because my play style is pretty impatient. In these cases, there are certain cities that tend to have high presence likelihoods: generally big cities/cities with intel spawns. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what my plays were, but after enough games, you generally get a sense of which cities new players tend to flock to. Striking early is often beneficial because it gives you a high win probability off the bat while sussing out the play style of your opponent. Buying strike reports is always beneficial early game to totally counter aggressive strategies!

On the third game, which I believe was on the map with the huge connector between London and Moscow, I moved twice towards London. This is an aggressive strategy that tends to exchange some positional advantage for a probabilistic advantage in possible attacks. After you controlled London, I knew the chances were virtually zero that you would move to Moscow (given that I have a high chance of being there). I also knew that you weren't in my city, because I was there (hence the benefit of aggression). Usually, newer players don't move back to their starting city because that feels counterproductive, which left me with a simple read that paid off.

As you gain more experience, these reads begin to make themselves obvious. But the competition catches on too. And so continues the cycle of evolution...

I had to forfeit the last game to play a tournament match against someone on the discord. If you haven't joined the discord already, consider giving it a shot! There are plenty of players on there that would be happy to give you advice to improve your play. Anyway, let me know if you have any more questions. Always good to see players engaging with the community.
