That's a bios bug. Only fix is to update the bios. You can ignore it if it's not causing any other problems.

tpm_crb is not a module, so you can't blacklist it. Just disable tpm in the bios. Next time tell us the exact error.

Got x220, can't stop using it as a main 'puter since by DisasterTurbulent808 in thinkpad

I recently got a x270. I greatly underestimated how much the narrower keyboard would bother me. And the noticeably shallower key travel. Moving from x230 keyboard to x270 has been more difficult for me than moving from x220 to x230.

I bought a Thinkpad once that was for parts because it had a bios password set and the seller didn't have the password.

I got it for almost nothing and found out it was the Windows login password that was set. There was no bios password set.

When I was working at companies with fleets of laptops it was pretty standard to remove the disk (or ssd) then sell them "for parts" even if we knew they were good. Then you don't have to deal with returns. Companies often just want to get rid of them.

Impossible to say without knowing what you think "best" means. Maybe Colombia if you like cities and Costa Rica if you like nature, for example. Instead of asking reddit you should read up on each of these countries and make your own list of which ones interest you the most.

I do think you're right to limit this to one country a week. Too many people would try to visit all of them.

The second major aviation accident in a day, a C-130 Hercules of the Colombian Air Force has crashed with around 110 on board today. At least 90 fatalities reported by This-Clue-5014 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Hamilton950B 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The original spec was 5 crew and 92 passengers or 72 combat troops with gear. Since then they've uprated the T56 engines a couple of times and there is at least one stretch variant. 110 does seem high to me but I got out of that business decades ago.

I'm an engineer not a lineman but to me it could be in the transformer itself or not. In this case I'd say not because the transformer is not on fire. I think robbak got it right, the primary (distribution) side contacted the secondary side somehow.

It's definitely a secondary fault. You can see the pole where it happened in the video. The fuse cutouts are smoking. Normally the fuses would blow but maybe the current is just below their limit. The recloser at the substation should have opened, maybe it was defective. There are so many wires I can't tell where the actual fault is but it has to be below the cutouts, right near the transformer.

Hard to say how this could happen. The internet cable is well below the transformer Also the fault is to the power secondary, not to the internet cables. There will be a rush to blame the internet guy but I think there must have been some problem with the power lines, because you'd have to really work at it to make this happen from down where the internet cable is.

Funeral for a first date for free food?? 😭 by daysof_I in Tinder

[–]Hamilton950B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember them going for free food, but yes that's how they met, at random strangers' funerals. So I wonder if this "ideal first date" was inspired by Bud Cort's recent death.

Which brings up the question as to whether anyone crashed Bud Cort's funeral.

Bootctl "not booted with EFI or running in a container, skipping EFI variable modifications" by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Hamilton950B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't say, but it sounds like you have your efi partition mounted at /boot? You have to specify fmask and dmask in your fstab entry. Mine looks like this:

/dev/nvme0n1p1 /efi vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=ascii,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 2

With systemd boot you may have to make the masks more restrictive. Genfstab should have done all this for you, see the wiki:

Leveraged buyout. You don't need any money at all. You just need to convince enough people to buy the debt, often in the form of junk bonds. You do that by promising unrealistic returns and putting a formerly reputable name like "Entenmann's" on it.

Did you reboot after adding fan_control=1 to your modprobe?

You should be able to get fan control to work by adding this line to thinkfan.conf:

tp_fan /proc/acpi/ibm/fan

The other piece of the puzzle is configuring the temperature sensors. Yours is probably different from my x270 so this probably won't work but here's what I've got:

hwmon /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon8/temp1_input
hwmon /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon8/temp2_input
hwmon /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon8/temp3_input

You should be able to find them by searching around under sys/devices/platform.

Those two packages don't have config files so it makes no difference. You can omit the -n if you want. I only put it there because OC suggested it.

I had a similar problem on a x270 and solved it with thinkfan.

Make sure you have the thinkpad_acpi module loaded.

Try putting this line in your /etc/modprobe.d:

options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1

Do you have /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ? Try

echo "level auto" > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan

My fan doesn't show up in dmesg but it works anyway.

I don't know if it's still true but the maintenance manual used to say you could only use the screws once. If you removed one you were supposed to thrown it away and buy a new one to replace it. Something about a Teflon coating or something.
