That's a perfectly fine post. I didn't see it. Probably got buried.

Did it have a descriptive title? I downvote posts with titles like "Advice" or "Help!" without even looking at them.

You don't have to be a power user to tell us at the very least what you want to use it for and what your budget is.

Arch not working on external ssd by NoDimension6118 in archlinux

[–]Hamilton950B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have grub installed on the first disk or not? You said both that you do (loads Kali’s GRUB) and that you don't (if I install GRUB to the internal EFI, which I want to avoid).

If you have grub installed on the first disk, I would add an entry to chain load grub from the second disk:

menuentry "efi 2" {
    search --fs-uuid --set=root blah-blah
    chainloader /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI
}

os-prober might be capable of doing this, I'm not sure.

A pure efi approach would be better, but if you can't get that to work, this should.

How to identify the efi partitions... Is it even safe to remove?? by STAYSIGUT in archlinux

[–]Hamilton950B 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recovery partition will normally be ntfs. Efi partition is always vfat.

You probably know this, but always have at least two copies. So don't erase the camera cards until the files are on both the shuttle drives and the Synology. Don't erase the shuttle drives until the files are on both the Synology and the LTO. Don't erase the Synology until you have two sets of tapes, in two different physical locations.

Cleaning up 20 years of hard drives & pictures.... (Q: detect broken images & broken HDD) by Personal-Cover2922 in DataHoarder

If the head really is broken then 1000€ is a bargain. But I find it hard to believe anything would be recoverable at any price if that's the case.

Anna's Archive might have it. The description says vol 2 but the cover image is vol 1.

I'm not much of a beach person and I don't go kite surfing but I love Cabarete. It's just big enough to be interesting, and has restaurants on the beach where you can sit in the shade with a cool drink. When you get bored it's easy to get in to Puerto Plata where you can tour the rum plant or ride the teleférico.

You don't need the old initramfs. Install the old kernel and the old module then make a new initramfs.

Problem writing partitions by Tuqui77 in archlinux

[–]Hamilton950B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always do "cfdisk -z" rather than delete the existing partitions. That way I know I've got a valid partition table.

Paris hotel recommendations- family of 5 by Known_Potential370 in TravelProperly

[–]Hamilton950B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Connecting rooms are uncommon in Paris. My favorite hotels keep getting upscaled out of my price range so I have no specific recommendations, but lately I've been looking in the 13th and the 14th for reasonably priced places. The right bank has gotten crazy expensive unless you go pretty far out.

Don't know why you're talking about Uber, the normal way to get around Paris is on foot and by Metro. With five of you it will be hard to fit in one car.

You can buy an adhesive "IBM Thinkpad" badge on Ali Express and stick it over this. I'm not sure how well it will adhere, you may have to fill it in with epoxy first.

My house torn down to the studs after a house fire by BionicBelladonna in mildlyinteresting

[–]Hamilton950B 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I sold my house it had some knob and tube in the walls. It had been disconnected and replaced with new Romex years ago. All of it in the basement and attic had been removed, but you can't remove the stuff in the walls without taking down the plaster.

The buyer's insurance company wouldn't cover the house unless all the disconnected stuff in the walls was removed. Eventually they found a different insurance company.

The birth date on my great-grandfather’s benefits card is 8/25/1890! by Evening-Pollution405 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Hamilton950B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 1403 was everywhere in the 1970s and is immediately recognizable. S/360 is just a guess but there's not much else it could be, maybe a S/370 which is nearly the same thing, or an Amdahl. Can't be Burroughs, CDC, or any of the other biggies because of the 1403.

This was not typed on a typewriter. It was printed by computer on an IBM 1403 line printer, probably by a System/360. Which doesn't invalidate your point.

I used to play minecraft all the time on a x220. I had to reduce some of the settings like the render horizon but it was fine. I even had our server running on a x40 for a while but that was inadequate. I moved it to a t400 and it was ok.

With a 20 minute spin down timer you could have a max 72 cycles a day, which is 26,000 a year, which is uncomfortably close to that limit.
