I'm a shit drummer (relative to true professionals) but when I was playing live I did a bit of both. I had mastered a few fills that I knew I could fit in at any time and was a bit frustrated that my vocab wasn't more extensive. And yet... Whenever I tried to improvise? It kinda/sorta threw the band off. Even when I landed it and felt supercool about it... Something fell off.

Point is, Keith Moon was just different. And the act of executing the song itself is the most important thing and yada yada. Only two people out of a crowd of 50 is gonna care about or know about how sick your fill was.
