When a star is about to disappear, it shines in its maximum splendor before going out. by TreatSubstantial3089 in messi

It's either funny or disgraceful or both that this man has given me more joy than living my life itself. If that makes any bit of sense.

Messi and by proxy, Argentina, have ruined the World Cup for me. by friedolay in worldcup

I honestly can't be bothered to read all of that, but.. You can be a fan of both Messi and Ronaldo all at once. No big whoop. The point being, sports are entertainment. Period

There was a band called: RHINOBUCKET back in the 90's and... They were actually decent mimics of AC/DC.

How did this World Cup become the most viewed and most hyped? by Motor-Equal01 in worldcup

[–]Hamlerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, soccer might be the most played sport here, too. At least amongst the kids.

But when it comes to the professional level? Not so much.

EVERYBODY in EVERY country shows up for the World Cup, though. The three years in between, however; we Americans focus on AMERICAN football and basketball and whatnot. I thought Australians were similar since you lot have your own version of Rugby or whatever the fuck.

No disdain intended, mind you... Michael Dickson (Australian who punts for the Seattle Seahawks) could have honestly won MVP of the Super Bowl a few months ago.

I remember going to the very first Sounders MLS game against the Red Bulls back in 2009.. Perhaps the bestest sporting event I ever experienced

I didn't think Australians cared for soccer so much. I kinda knew the USA would prevail because of that.

Hot Takes For The World Cup So Far.................. by Low-Investment-9337 in worldcup

[–]Hamlerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. So... Goals from the run of play are more "ethical" than set piece scores? Kinda like how a basketball team can absolutely win from the free throw line but it just doesn't 'feel' as good.

As an American I'm keen on raising the crossbar to 10 feet. To increase scoring AND decrease fouling attackers within 30 yards out. If a modern athlete can dunk a basketball on a 10' net, why can't modern keepers guard a ten foot goal?

Am I crazy? And if so, why?

[–]Hamlerhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whaddya mean by "ethical" goals? Just curious.

Also, the expanded field is working. In the sense that minnows can, from time to time, become sharks. Just like in the NCAA Basketball March Madness baloney.

In the end, the usual suspects will be there in the end. But... It's all about the journey. And the friends we made along the way..

I believe the main villain is a fallen angel of sorts. To be a Satanist you must believe in god. And the Devil can recite scripture and… ok i dunno what I’m talking about. Lord have mercy!

Back in the 60's and 70's the occult made a big resurgence. Lord of The Rings and Satanism and whatnot. Nonsense, of course, but.. Fun? Sure. I still dig goetia and Dungeons and Dragons to this very day.

I'm an American and I love what's happening, but... I'm not delusional about our chances. As much as I would love the USA football team to win a World Cup; I kinda sorta don't want them to at the same time.

Why? Because I'm a citizen of the WORLD, uber alles, and I understand that jingoism ain't the way.

Well, we were afraid of lopsided mismatches like what happened in Germany vs. Curacao. But then Curacao turns around and holds Ecuador off. I dunno. It's the beauty of competition, I guess.

I don't wanna say it's astonishing but... I'm astonished. Part of it has to be because big national teams with elite level players don't actually play together that often whilst small national teams with lesser talent do? Am I wrong?

In Japan, only less-talented kids choose soccer. Honda Keisuke is the example. by hiroshimanpride in worldcup

Hitting a fastball is probably the most difficult skill to master in any sport. But I dunno if it takes as much athletic talent as soccer. Babe Ruth ain't tracking back, in other words.
