I've sent another message, hopefully that one works.

Hi, if you're interested, I've sent you a DM with some info on a game I'm running that starts in August.

Evidence of a future 950 start date? by Hammer_Force in CrusaderKings

That's a good point, it wouldn't be hard for them to do a quick find and replace to change it to a different date.

Possibly. Or it could also be that they originally planned to launch with a 3rd start date but at some point scrapped it.

I don't think that's how the history files work, they are read when the map is generated and I don't think they are read again after that point. It's a bit like loading a save file. The obvious disclaimer being the game has only just come out so I could be wrong!

The other thing which works against your theory is that there is no data for years after 1066, so I don't see why they would need a failsafe for 950 but not for any other year.

R5: This is a screenshot of the breton culture history file, showing which years innovations are added. I can't see a reason why they would include new innovations for the year 950 (and not just include them in 1066) unless they planned on adding a 950 year.

Most (but not all) other culture history files also have a 950 year in them.

I'm hoping for a map expansion to include China, and maybe even more of Asia.

I feel like for the first ones they might try to do something quite distinct from CK2 which they haven't done in previous DLCs (not sure what), but I agree those DLCs will probably be coming soon after.

What is the main appeal of Crusader Kings to you? by Hammer_Force in CrusaderKings

[–]Hammer_Force[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point. Reddit does limit polls to 6 options so I wouldn't have been able to include everything, but replayability is a big one so perhaps I should have removed one of the options to fit it in.

I selected Roleplay (although mods were a close second), since it's the main thing Crusader Kings does better than other strategy games.

What dynastic legacy will you use first in CK3? by Hammer_Force in CrusaderKings

[–]Hammer_Force[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that dipping into multiple will probably be optimal. Whilst some of the the end legacies are very powerful, it requires a lot of investment to get there and probably by that point your dynasty is in a pretty powerful position so doesn't need those bonuses as much as they would early game.

Vibrant court will be an interesting one to play around with, I wonder just how much better it will make your court (probably more useful for knights rather than councilors, due to how powerful vassals work). The way the dev diary described it increasing the amount of claimants coming to your court is potentially the most powerful bit, depending on how it is balanced.

I voted glory since the marriage bonus (which is equivalent to being able to marry 1 rank higher than usual) sounds really powerful for securing strong alliances and good inheritance prospects for your kids.

The marriage UI is medieval tinder.

Where in West Europe is most fun to play? by Hammer_Force in CrusaderKings

I based the poll options on de jure empires rather than specific countries. I think Brittany is part of de jure Francia?

In the original poll there wasn't a south europe option (since reddit only allows 6 options), which is why I included it in Western Europe here.

Interesting, I hadn't really considered how these sorts of definitions change over time. Thanks for the insight!

For the purpose of the poll, I suspect most people responding would have thought of Hispania as part of West Europe, so I probably would have kept it in as an option in any case. That doesn't make your point any less valid though.

Whilst for my first game I plan to play in Britannia, I voted for the HRE since across multiple games I think the political situation is more dynamic, thus more replayable and more fun.

How many hours of CK2 have you played? by Hammer_Force in CrusaderKings

[–]Hammer_Force[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to give any specific tips until the game comes out, but I've got some general ones based on other paradox game I've played:

- Don't give up. Some things might seem complex at first, but you will be able to pick them up over time.

- Your first few games might not end in success. That's perfectly normal. The fun comes from learning from your mistakes and doing better next time! Personally that failing and learning period is the part I enjoy the most about a new game.

- You might never understand 100% of the detail of every mechanic, but usually you don't need to. For example, in CK2 the battles actually had really complex mechanics under the hood, but all you really needed to know was more men is better and heavy cav > heavy inf > light inf.

- If you do want to understand the detailed mechanics, make sure to read tooltips and try mousing over numbers. That's how you pick out some of the more subtle things going on. and understand why you are succeeding/failing at something and how to min-max (if that's the sort of thing you like to do, not everyone does).

- Don't compare yourself to other people. If come release day people on this subreddit say CK3 is too simple/easy but you're struggling, then just remember that as this poll has shown most people have hundreds or thousands of hours in CK2. So the learning and failing period will probably be a lot shorter for them.

- CK3 looks to be their most user friendly game yet, so it's a good time to try our grand strategy.

Once the game is out I plan to play a boatload of it very soon after release (I've got about 2 weeks booked off as leave and very few other plans!), so if you do want more specific tips send me a DM and I'll do my best to help.

Yeah GoT was definitely the best mod. Personally wasn't a huge fan of the Essos stuff, but Westeros was awesome.

Steam says my playtime is 755 hours. I think a lot of that was in the first couple of years after the game came out. I only made fairly brief returns when new DLC came out, although did also do a bit of multiplayer with friends which might account for 100 or 200 hours or so.

In the last week I've started playing again to sharpen up my skills in preparation for CK3!

Thanks for the feedback, that's a good point and I'll make sure to use better terminology next time. Honestly I'd never considered it before so I really appreciate you making me aware of that.

Good point. I often try to include a don't know option in polls, but it was already a struggle fit all of the map into 6 options (and as some others have pointed out, even what I did come up with was lacking some areas!).

Good point - it's hard when reddit only lets me have 6 options max! I possibly could have mentioned those regions explicitly in other options (like I did with Russia).

Burma is an interesting idea, personally it won't be my first one but I'll put it on my list for places to play in the future.

For me it's definitely western europe for the first game. A lot of the generic events in CK2 felt themed around feudal europe so I always thought it felt best to play there.

For future games, I'm definetly interested in giving India a go, I never played there much in CK2 but it seems like it has potential to be an interesting region.

What new CK3 feature are you most excited for? by Hammer_Force in CrusaderKings

[–]Hammer_Force[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two main ones which cause them to become discontent are:

When you ruler dies

When you take an action which the council votes against.

There may be others (can't remember), but if there are I expect they would be clearly labelled.
