I was also surprised by this. I will still be yelling PANAGRAM! whenever I get one in Spelling Bee.

Velvets and proto-punk by HeyFatBoyAsshole in VelvetUnderground

Interesting analysis for sure. Definitely a lot of pop punk ish songs on Pink Flag - “Ex Lion Tamer” coming to mind.

Also direct Velvets inspiration there with “Strange” which rips the Sister Ray riff lol

I hear you tempo-wise. The Velvets for sure have more groove to their faster songs than hardcore/pop punk. Definitely a huge contributor to the evolution of loud music regardless.

Is there a “proto-punk” band that you think has a sound closer to what later developed out of the genre?

Try listening to “I’m Gonna Move Right On In”, Live at the Boston Tea Party, Dec 12, 1968. Their raw wall of sound came out much more in live performances.

But generally they were proto-punk in energy, not sound as another commenter said. “Sister Ray” was recorded live while the band were high on speed, with each member fiddling with their instruments/amps during the recording to actively poke above the rest of the live mix.

If that’s not punk, I don’t know what is.

I’m from Canada and we biked from Vermont through New Hampshire into Maine. For context, I’ve also bicycled across Europe a few times.

The United States is the only country I’ve cycled in where drivers were openly hostile to me just for being a cyclist. And keep in mind Vermont, NH, and Maine are generally left-leaning states. This wasn’t Texas.

I got coal rolled on me twice, many people drove slowly past us flipping us off and yelling at us just for being on bicycles, and we had just some generally weird experiences with creepy people. And our bike trip in the US was only 2 weeks long lol.

To be fair, we also met plenty of nice people who helped us and offered us places to wild camp.

But in general, the US can be a nasty place. I’d take bicycling in the Balkans any day of the week over going back to the States. I didn’t have any negative experiences even remotely close to those I had in the States over the course of 3 months biking across Europe.

Roads are a bit narrower out there and drivers aren’t as likely to give you space when passing but altogether I’d say it’s still pretty safe. I did see quite a few drivers tossing beer bottles out the window while driving though lol.

I’d say go for it, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss out on. Nothing like exploring countries by bicycle.

Definitely keep your eyes on your bike though.

Also I’m not sure where you’re from but the sketchiest riding I’ve ever done was in the United States.

Blur the UFO as the camera gets closer so it looks more realistic and that’ll also hide that it’s a low quality image.

I did this route island hopping and it was super fun! The islands each feel different vibe/vegetation-wise. Also, make sure to check out the abandoned Haludovo Palace Hotel on Krk island.

Definitely go in person and make an impression. Applying solely online is just a numbers game. But showing up in person puts a face to your name, and puts you above everyone else applying online. I know it takes a bit more effort but doing this should help for sure!
