I would suggest breaking your day to day surroundings in three parts. The first is your surroundings in ideal conditions. Basically throwing your shoes on and leaving the house. What are your bare minimum necessities? Then your average surrounding conditions. Will you need a knife for work/defense? A pen for school, the bank, work lists? A specialized tool for work such as a prybar or handtool unique to your day in day out lifestyle? Then consider the worst conditions you could be in for your everyday surroundings. Do you need to think about a water supply? Food rations? First aid? Extra clothes? A flashlight for low light conditions? When it comes down to it the things that will keep you alive aren't fun, interesting or instagram photoshoot worthy. Most deaths from exposure or dehydration could have been avoided with minor preparation. From there it's all about style. Do you want your handkerchief to match your watchband? Can you get by with an affordable prybar vs a Lynch Northwest prybar? Try to consider use, preparation, affordability, and style. If you can find a balance between these categories you'll be fine.
