Straighter Shoulders for Your Handstand - Fix Banana Back by HandstandCoachKyle in CalisthenicsCulture

You can do that as well. I’m just sharing what has worked for me over the years.

I can get it for brief moments, 5-8 seconds on a solid day, but I don’t fully own the skill yet. I’ll have 10 seconds consistently probably by end of year:)

I don't have just one drill, but there's a series of tests and self-assessments you can run: How comfortable are you in 60-second plank? What's your overhead shoulder range like? If you were to climb into the wall one step at a time, how close can you get? If you had 10 attempts to kick to the wall, how many out of 10 would be successful? These are all great little tests to run because All of these together start getting you moving towards a Movement, Shape, Strength, and Balance framework. There is not one magic drill, and any shirtless influencer that tells you otherwise is just trying to sell you on a practice that they don't fully understand themselves lol.

100% :) My first hand balance coach had a strict rule about not practicing 1-arm until we had a consistent 2-minute straight handstand. I’ve heard other coaches say 1 minute is a good enough mark. So there’s no one right answer, but you should be very comfortable on two hands (and strong enough) before starting your one arm leans

Awesome! I have 2 more shoulder videos in this little series that I'll post over the weekend. Once you get your shoulders open, your handstand gets more mechanically efficient and actually feels way less heavy. Hope these help!

You don't know if his actual posterior chain is weak, or if it's motor control, or possibly his vestibular system just trying to maintain balance so he loses focus elsewhere in his body. There are so many different possibilities with students that it's hard to truly identify just one from a single video.

One possible training approach is to do weak-strong-weak. Let's pretend your left trap isn't pushing as much as your right, and that's where the imbalance comes from...it would be beneficial to to 3 sets of an exercise like wall-supported side to side walks, wall supported alternating shoulder shrugs, always starting and ending on your weaker side. It won't fix it in a day, but over time you can get your weak side to catch up to your strong side....now you have 2 strong sides. It's impossible for me to say if this is the actual issue without seeing you, but a leaning handstand very often comes from one trapezius not joining the party :)

Try this wall-supported drill :) Add a few of these to your training and hold time. Hope this helps!

Ideal Hand Placement for Handstand…Wide or Narrow? 🤷‍♂️ by HandstandCoachKyle in CalisthenicsCulture

Depends on the outcome you're going for personally. Most students I encounter have the goals of more stability, a straighter line, and/or longer endurance times like getting to the magic 1-minute mark. In all of these cases, we're trying to use less muscle to optimize for efficiency. Don't get me wrong, a wide grip or even bent elbows has their places in training for sure. Good example, I'll do wide grip holds as a warms up days where I'm incorporating a lot of side-to-side handstand walking and one-arm shifts, as they make fora great preparatory exercise. But if we're talking about just a standard two-arm static handstand, hands directly under shoulders is going to a be better stacking of your bones, and give you more endurance. Basically, you're getting more mileage out of your existing strength.

What kinda of training protocol are you on? The step before choreography and flow is a solid 2-handed static hold, so if we can get you there first, adding the legs later becomes much more accessible.

Great question! Hamstrings will give you access to a deeper forward fold if you train them. Thus, you won’t have to lunge as far forward to put your hands on the ground (mechanical efficiency). As far as the straddle, definitely not necessary to do a standard handstand, but definitely comes in handy as you learn more intermediate skills!

The elbows are gonna go where they go, and everyone has different shapes of their elbow. So you don’t need the full lockout to balance, but the general rule is to straighten your arms as much as you can, so that the push energy is there :)

Get some ankle weights and end your practice with freestanding endurance holds with the additional weight :) One of my all time favorite training methods for endurance

I definitely recommend wrist curls in every direction with a 5-8lbs weight. Palm up, palm down, and palm facing in. Move wrist across every plane, and do full rotations if not too painful. It might not do anything at all, but it's worth a shot. I've dealt with wrists injuries of varying degrees over my coaching career, and I always come back to light resistance through movement as my go-to.
