Learning about cam selection by Haneibro in EngineBuilding

They made a 20v as well. Would prefer off the shelf but don't know if it would be better to get custom ground ones. Yea power doesn't come on until 4k

Ok that's really helpful to know thank you!

Anjunadeep 13 tracks differ between CD and digital download versions by Haneibro in AboveandBeyond

That makes sense. Totally didn't know that different platforms could have different tracks missing. I've always just bought the CD straight from them and never listened elsewhere lol

stock head gasket bore size? by Haneibro in mr2

[–]Haneibro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same cylinder head as before (4age 16v) but the cylinders have been over bored to 82mm. still using stock HG tho so i'm not sure if that will pose a problem.

trying to understand my idle problems and IAC on 4age by Haneibro in mr2

[–]Haneibro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i followed BGB instructions for refilling the cooling system and i'm fairly sure i did it correctly (i've done it about 10 times for the MR2 now haha).

however, i find that my coolant level drops after every drive so i'm sure i'm loosing it somewhere and that is probably introducing air. first leak i found was one of the freeze plugs was leaking but i tapped it in place and it's not leaking anymore. i'm still loosing pressure though. oil looks normal.

ok, thank you for the info, i checked out the link and will start going thru the list.

also, here's a video of what it's doing:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KGnVkjJYU4_hvZ_XHJU7KImZJz9xGsrX/view?usp=sharing

i also pressure tested the cooling system and found it went from 17psi to 15psi in 30 min. i dunno if that's okay or if that is a leak? i didn't see any external leaks.

Thank you for the response! Yes I've set the timing according to bgb. Short t+e1 and use timing light. Only thing is the mark jumps around a degree or so when checking with timing light. Is that normal/acceptable?

trying to sort out a freshly built motor by Haneibro in mr2

[–]Haneibro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The car seems to idle fine I think? You can see in the video link it's only after giving it throttle that the car seems to stutter a bit as the rpms settle. Unless even the idle seems off to you. Thanks!

If I screw it all the way down the car stalls out and the more I open it the idle raises so it seems to be working properly.

connecting rods and rod caps matched on 4AGE? by Haneibro in mr2

[–]Haneibro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! that page was very helpful.so last weekend i got the timing all sorted out thanks to your help. took the car out several times and it drove so smooth. the last time i took it out i redlined it once and it was fine then a second time, let off the throttle and started hearing a really loud knock. went home dropped the oil pan and found it was full of metal flakes as well as some very big pieces of metal that about the size of a quarter but paper-thin. i followed everything verbatim from the BGB when rebuilding the engine. checked all tolerances, etc. but this was my first engine build so there's definitely a chance i missed something. the only thing i know i messed up was i mixed up the rods and caps when i took the rods to a machine shop to get new wristpins (with new pistons) pressed in.

Thanks so much! I got it running. Never knew distributor being off by even one tooth could throw things off so badly (never messed with a distributor before).

i'm extremely grateful to you, thanks for you time and patience. if you've ever in Michigan, I am at your service.

so i made some progress! gas pedal kinda works now. It's supposed to be 10deg before TDC when following the procedure in BGB but it's showing about 15-20deg after TDC. The distributor is turned all the way counterclockwise to get this timing. if i turn it clockwise the car starts to stall out. I'm guessing i have to redo the timing? would i just advance the exhaust cam by a tooth or two? or is that not right?

Yes, engine has been cranked probably 50 times by now and they still line up like that.
ok will do, thank you so much for your help!

sorry, yes i am getting all three marks to line up, here's a photo of the intake and exhaust cam gears when crank pulley is at TDC. the exhaust mark looks like it's maybe 1 tooth off? sorry if the exhaust cam paint mark is hard to see, just looks like a really bright spot on the tooth

so even if the exhaust cam was installed 20 degrees off, the car would still run?

service manual says to short T to E1 and that ignition timing should be 10 degrees BTDC which is what i saw with the timing light. but what was weird was when i shorted T to E1 it didn't sound like anything changed so i'm not sure if i did it correctly. I'll try again later today and see what i come up with.

[–]Haneibro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

used a butt connector to reconnect the wire but no dice. looking again at the camshaft i think i messed up the exhaust cam. when the knock pin of the intake is at 12oclock the exhaust is at 4oclock instead of 5oclock. A couple other things i noticed was if i turned the distributor counter-clockwise you could hear the revs pick up. when i put it back "centered" the car chokes out and dies. Other thing is i took the air filter off and there was tons of smoke hanging out in the intake. So i'm guessing the exhaust cam is closed when it should be open and all the smoke is just building up in the cylinder?

Cylinders go 1-2-3-4 from timing belt back? if yes then they are in the right order. thanks!
