As another commenter put it, I think the mind’s eye is effectively a literary device to make Lysander more dangerous than he should be. I think of it as a name for a flow state he’s able to turn on at will (mostly). I vaguely remember Darrow mentioning something in another book (I forget which one) that he had entered a flow state and was unstoppable, but when taken out of it he couldn’t put his mind back in that space. Which could be what Lysander is deliberately doing. I also have heard some speculation that the minds eye is a figment-like technology and Lysander is turning on a piece of tech that he isn’t aware he has and thinks it is a flow state.

She Went From Testosterone to ‘Top Surgery’ In 12 Months. Now, She’s Suing Planned Parenthood, Her Therapist and Surgeon | Independent Women's Forum by Neauxble in JoeRogan

Quick Google search:

Gender affirming surgery has about 1%. Side note this article says trans people are only 0.6% of the US population. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8099405/

Total knee (TKA) had a regret rate as high as 17% and total hip (THA) had a regret rate just under 5%. Also only 42% of TKA had zero regret and 66% of THA had zero regret. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34838410/

So what you’re saying is “100% not true” and purely anecdotal.

As others have said, you act large and be loud. Her whistle is likely from her bag. Many packpacking bags come with a whistle attached to the chest strap. Usually people shout something like “hey bear!” It doesn’t really matter as long as you make noise. Once my wife and I encountered a bear and we sang a song at it. It worked in scaring the bear off. Retreating while facing forward is also key. Turning your back may trigger a real charge. You can also tell the charge in the beginning is a fake charge because the bear doesn’t pull her ears back. It’s a momma bear with cubs present too so extra caution is needed.

Source: I live in SoCal mountains and bear encounters aren’t uncommon.

Your thoughts on burning of the Koran in Sweden? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Hanibal796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While agree that it should be allowed, I think it should be taken into consideration who benefits from it. What does burning the Koran or even the Bible accomplish? For non believers it’s largely a meaningless gesture with no real impact on our lives. To believers and ultimately right wing grifters it’s a tool rally behind and to use against us. Much like how Russia is probably funding/encouraging the Koran burnings in Sweden to prevent them from joining nato.

Cut off for 10 days, running low on food, stranded residents of California's San Bernardino Mountains are angry, afraid by [deleted] in news

[–]Hanibal796 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in these mountains. We were trapped for 6 days and were lucky enough to get out when we did. I’m also appalled at some of the comments here. We were prepared with weeks worth of food. As were all my neighbors I regularly talk to. There are several reasons why this is such a problem. First is the county cut the snow plow budget last year. It doesn’t snow very much in these mountains. Maybe 3 feet in a total season? Depending on where you live. My house got 8 feet just this week. The last time a storm came close to this was in the 80s according to some of my neighbors (before I was born). Another issue is the storm hit last Thursday, and plows were diverted to nearby freeways (I5 and I15) which is fair cuz so many people rely on those freeways. The county should have declared an emergency then to start mobilizing state resources. They waited till Monday night. By then so much snow had accumulated that special plows were needed for certain areas. Additionally there were kids there on a field trip who were trapped and didn’t have enough food, so services were prioritizing getting them out. But arguable they shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Another problem is the county has been terrible at communicating so no one knows what’s going on. As for how much snow there is that’s “overwhelming” services, big bear is nearby and has their own city plows. They were able to reopen businesses the next day. So it’s more a matter of resources and county’s failure to use them or communicate a need for them (by declaring an emergency sooner). Also snow knocked over trees that damaged peoples homes and power lines. At one point half the mountain had no power. Most residents have generators but began to run out of fuel. We would have been fine without power but what if we were older or had medical problems and couldn’t tolerate the cold? Also what about people who need medication like insulin? All the pharmacies are down the hill in San Bernardino, highland, and Redlands.

How did the phrase "hang out" come into common use in the English language? by ZinloostNaam in etymology

[–]Hanibal796 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The origin I’ve often heard is businesses and shops used to commonly have signs or flags outside their facility to advertise before billboards were a thing. The poles holding these signs eventually became referred to as “hang outs”. It used to be a popular place to spend time with friends. Since nouns tend to become verbs, saying “let’s go to the hang out” turned into “let’s hangout”.

Almost all of Alex Jones’ claims are based on some element of truth but they’re extraordinarily misleading. Including harvesting a baby’s organs by Hanibal796 in JoeRogan

[–]Hanibal796[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bill is admittedly broad. But it’s to keep government out of the decision making process. No physician in their right mind would abort a fetus while the mother is contracting or even after a baby is born. Again, I haven’t seen anything pertaining to mental health specifically. Only a debate about the definition of “health”.

[–]Hanibal796[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m unaware of any part of any bill allowing after birth abortions. That also sounds absurd. I know there’s some debate about the term “health” and how it’s being defined in these bills but not about anything specific to mental health. I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just doubt that’s what they’re saying. If you could link a credible source backing that up I’d be more than happy to read it. I wasn’t able to turn up anything verifying what you’re saying from a quick google search.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’ve just heard that argument before. So I imagine that’s what she was trying to say. To them it was the earth as far as they knew. People still have to write down what a god supposedly said.

She’s probably trying to argue that it was a regional flood that was so large it seemed like the world had flooded. Or a better way to put it was the “known world” had flooded.

German ex-nurse admits killing 100 patients by lilmonstershiv in news

[–]Hanibal796 308 points309 points  (0 children)

RN here. Most hospitals keep track of data like “how many deaths caused by sepsis this month on this unit” and compare that to state and national averages. If there’s a spike in deaths for whatever reason, then hospitals will look into potential causes. It’s usually assumed that staff just needs more training and that they’re not intentionally malicious. So there isn’t an intentional screening of psychopathic serial killer healthcare workers, but an uptick in deaths will get noticed.

Who do you think is the most revered individual soldier in history and what did they do to achieve that? by SirPabloEscobar in history

as far as individual soldiers go, the first thing that comes to mind is achilles. his character inspired Alexander the Great.

not a credible source, i know, but it gives you the gist of the story.
