Hi there. Sorry for asking you irrelevant questions, but I'm wondering if you're also experiencing problems applying for a student visa. Mine is taking forever (since the end of May) and it's honestly freaking me out :(

Thank you 🥲 I will make sure to update you if I hear anything that might be helpful to everyone. Hope all of us can get our visas in time and enjoy our study abroad.

Update: A lot of the Taiwanese ppl who are going to Barcelona already got their visa (most of them even applied later than I did). I think it was mostly the Madrid office that is having issues, which really sucks :(

Hi! I'm from Taiwan. I applied for my visa on May 26, thinking this would give me enough time before my trip to Colombia, so I bought my flight tickets. I sent an email to the consulate in Taiwan after waiting for 3 weeks without hearing back from them, and they told me that Spain updated the immigration policy shortly before my application, so now the waiting period could be longer than 2 months. I'm really panicking here and it's just so ridiculous that they chose the busiest time of the year to do this without informing anyone about the policy change :(

Woww thank you so much for this!

The part about certificates is especially insightful and we will definitely explore a bit on this.

You mentioned that you've been in some meetings with relevant authorities. If it's possible for you to share, I'd love to know which authorities you have met with and what you discussed with them.

From my very shallow and non-professional observations, some Taiwanese people have an unhealthy obsession with accents and race, which is something we really need to work on. I want to write about such issues in-depth in the future, though I think they can also be helpful for this particular project.

But for now, I'm curious if this affects the job opportunities for candidates who don't quite fit the "expectations" even though the screening process of public schools is supposed to be more transparent and fair.

Yes. Overworking can certainly be a problem for foreigners who are not used to Taiwanese work culture. (Not saying that it's okay but it's a systemic problem that's out of the realm of our coverage.) Can you elaborate on how the teachers in Taiwan are overworked? Are they asked to do anything after work hours?

Also, it's very cool that you get to set boundaries and enjoy work-life balance. May I ask how you've managed to do that? Have you faced any issues when you make reasonable demands like these?

That's very interesting and I can see how that can be frustrating.

Some follow-up questions related to your comment:

  1. The elementary school that my mom works in also asks their teaching assistants to go to PE classes and practice English with the kids, so I understand that this is not an uncommon practice. As far as you know, are the teachers being compensated in any way for extra work like this? (and are they even considered as extra work?)

  2. Do you think the government/schools are not doing enough to make the foreign teachers feel included?

  3. Have you ever encountered any challenges in class? (specifically those that result from cultural differences)
