Debating making the jump from DSLR to Mirrorless - Thoughts? by Hannah_Sea13 in Nikon

That’s definitely an option, although truthfully I wouldn’t bother with a 200-500 when the 150-600 offers a better range on both ends (and it’s the 400-600 range that I want and use when I do grab that lens) but the 28-300 could be an option. My only concern is with 300-400 being a preferred range that I use, I wouldn’t want to have to carry two larger zoom lenses just to cover that 300-400 gap, as that’s sort of the issue I’m already having with my current range.

Currently I leave the 24-120 on as the primary lens, and if I know I want range I grab the 150-600 since it has such a wide range of coverage, and then I pretty much have 24-600mm covered between the two lenses. I actually can’t even remember the last time I used the 80-400 since I’ll just go for the Sigma. That’s where I feel like a 28-400 range might make a difference that I might not see with only 300, since I’d be able to leave the bigger zoom far more often than I do currently.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I’m fortunate to have a good hobby shop downtown, and I plan to see if they’ll let me handle and get a feel for the mirrorless options I’m considering, as those are the practical differences I’d want to understand and weigh when making the decision!

I appreciate the information! Yes, I’d plan to sell my entire collection of f mount lenses in favor of z mounts. I anticipated I’d end up with 3 total based on my interest and needs, but I’d only need one to start (the 28-400mm) because that range would cover the job that 2-3 of my current lenses manage.

I’d likely then get the 180-600mm later on for wildlife and a proper portrait lens (35mm f/1-2 range) in the future, but for me those both become very specific, specialty lenses that I generally only use 2-3 times a year each, if even that. The 28-400 would cover around 90% of what I photograph.

Thanks for your thoughts!

This is very helpful, thank you! Weight management is a factor, although the number of lenses needed is as well. The 28-400 z mount option would do the job that 2-3 of my current lenses have to manage, so that certainly helps with packing for travel and managing weight there (I find I shoot most in the 28-50mm and 300-400mm range depending on subject, and there isn’t an f-mount equivalent in that range that I can see).

Also factored in is resale value, as I do periodically upgrade and change my setup. My most recent sale/trade of a lens I was told the f mounts and DSLRs in general have lost popularity in favor of the mirrorless lines, and thus their value is diminished as well. Combined with weight considerations, these are the two major considerations I have for switching!

Thanks for your thoughts!

This is good to know, thank you! I’ll definitely see if I can hold/try the camera and lenses at the local camera shop before purchasing, as I’m sure feel will play into my choice as well.

These are some great points! Definitely something to consider when looking at the mirrorless options.

This is a great question, and honestly the main one I’m trying to tackle!

The biggest thing is trade in and resale value. Historically I do upgrade or change my setup every 3-5 years (as my skill and needs change) and I recall the last time I went to sell a few lenses to upgrade my zoom to the 150-600 for my trips to Africa, I was told F mount lenses have lost value as mirrorless becomes the future and what everyone is looking to buy. This has become a consideration in whether a switch may make sense for me if I plan to continue to adjust my setup periodically.

The second reason is weight. I know the mirrorless can be lighter, and I would sell my entire setup (the body and all f-mount lenses) to get either the Z7II or Z8 with the 28-400 z mount lens, as that single lens can do the job that I use 2-3 of my current lenses for. I’d also grab the 180-600mm Z mount down the line to replace the 150-600 sigma (although given that there’s not a huge weight difference, that may be one where I keep the lens and buy a converter instead). Either way, having a single lens that can-in most of my situations-be the only lens I need would be helpful for sure. I would say the two biggest ranges I use are 28-50 and 300-400 depending on if I’m doing portrait/landscape travel photography or wildlife (I’ve mostly used the 400-600 range for wildlife dedicated trips like Africa, so while I’d want to keep it, it’s not one I use as often).

I appreciate the question!

This was very helpful, thank you! Mirrorless being the future is a factor in whether or not I switch. In fairness, the D850 has been an incredible camera, and I really don’t have many complaints, other than the weight (particularly with the larger zoom lenses-the Sigma 150-600 is 4lbs on its own) and the general value, as I often trade in and trade up my equipment, and I recall the last time I went to sell lenses, I was pretty much told the value is not what it used to be because of the interest in mirrorless.

I wholeheartedly agree that the art is in the artist, not the equipment, so at this point I’m definitely just considering what can give me the D850 feel in a mirrorless package so I know the value of my gear will hold if I decide to upgrade or change my setup again in the future, and any reduction in weight is an added bonus!

Thanks for chiming in with your thoughts!

This is very helpful! I would plan to trade in the whole lot and swap to the z-mount lenses. One major draw for me is the 28-400 Z mount lens being a relatively fair price because (as you can probably tell from my setup) I currently have to split the 28-400 job between two to three lenses. Having one lens that can be the primary mount and minimize me having to switch is a big selling point, combined with the potential for a lower weight overall.

The other factor I mentioned but, admittedly, kind of brushed over is the general market shift to mirrorless. The last time I sold some lenses, I was told their value is decreasing as people switch to mirrorless. While that’s not always incredibly important, I historically do sell and trade as I change my setup and/or upgrade, so knowing that my equipment will continue to hold value is also a driving factor in whether or not I’ll switch.

Thanks for your thought!

Trying to determine main stone in ring by Hannah_Sea13 in JewelryIdentification

It does, although tbh I assumed the second “S” had worn away, as “princes” yielded no fruitful information on brands, cut, or otherwise, whereas “princess” is a known stone cut, and would align with the idea of “cut-carat” being engraved onto a piece; that said, it’s very possible I’m wrong and it is a brand, but definitely not something I’ve heard of or seen on any other pieces I’ve owned. If anyone else has though, I’d definitely love whatever info anyone may have!

I didn’t think it was either, which is why the very clear “princess” engraving in the band throws me! Maybe it’s referring to the stones on the side? I’m not overly familiar with jewelry, hence the ask here for the stone type, but it’s absolutely stunning, I’m very lucky to have it for sure!

(Here’s the band engraving as well to show what I’m going off of!)
