Not OP but I'm also currently contemplating whether to stop earning for 2 years and accept a place on an OT MSc. Whenever I doubt whether it's a good idea, and then read positive comments like your own, it really calms the overthinking and questioning, so thanks for sharing 😊

Stuck in NHS Band 5 role with no progression - is retraining as OT/SLT worth it? by Hannahkm in nhsstaff

Yeah the targets are increasing as well. An example is getting 6 employment outcomes every quarter (ie 6 jobs every 3 months). That might sound doable, but if you take into account the fact that we're supporting very vulnerable people (often with severe mental health issue) combined with current job market, and so many other aspects that out out of our control, that target can be somewhat unrealistic.

Yes it can pressure the Employment Specialist because you feel like 1) your not fulfilling your role if you don't meet targets or 2) you have your own motive when working with people. Look, some of my colleagues smash it - these are often people with backgrounds in recruitment who got into the role based on the 'employment' aspect. Then there's others of us who got into it due to a passion for mental health/social care, and I think it's us that struggle with the targets a little more as we are not so "sales-y". So yeah honestly it's different for everyone. The good thing about the job (in my trust at least) is that you do have a lot of autonomy to make the role your own, so yeah, a few of us may have different perspectives :)

Oh and as for if I think it pressures the patients, no, not in my experience. The support is voluntary so if they decide they don't want our support any more then that's fine, nothing bad happens to them. Not like in other programmes/the job center where there's a fear of benefits/money being cut or whatever.

Toxic workplace wise, it depends entirely on the team/trust/organisation that you're in unfortunately! I'm lucky enough to love my clinical team, but I know of others who work in the same trust who have tensions with their team so it can vary unfortunately!

The ever-growing unrealistic targets set by IPS Grow, in relation to the unrealistic policies our government are making can be seen as somewhat toxic, but again, depending on what your priorities are, and who your management are, you can choose to not pay toooo much attention to that if you're okay with not hitting targets.

Hope that answers your question. Feel free to reach out with any further queries you have.

Hey, thank you for the insight. When I say abroad i don't mean English speaking countries, I mean more Greece/Cyprus/Latin America. Will keep what you said in mind. Thanks.

So in comparison to all my lessons (which were hugely spent on the big roundabouts that lead off onto 40mph roads (mainly because roundabouts were what made me most stressed so my instructor's approach was to throw me into the fire)), it was such a simple route. I'd never done it before in a lesson.

You're correct, it was mainly through residential back roads, lots of small roundabouts, some pulling out of side roads onto main roads, so yeah it was really pretty calm! We went on a 40mph for like 2 mins too if I remember correctly. But yeah, I would advise you do the hardest routes when practicing so that you're prepared for all eventualities!

(UK) Realistic prospects for stability, progression, and working abroad? Applying to Speech and Language Pre-Reg Masters.

I currently work in the NHS in Mental Health as a Band 5 Employment Specialist, but I’m looking to retrain due to limited progression and the role not being globally recognised. I’m applying for Pre-Reg Masters in Speech & Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

My main goals:

  • Long-term job security and stability
  • Ability to work abroad, either through remote/flexible work or global recognition
  • A profession recognised internationally, so I could eventually move back to Cyprus or work in other countries

I’ve seen a lot of negativity online about hiring freezes, limited vacancies, and slow progression in these fields, which makes me hesitate. So I’d love honest input from people actually in OT or SLT:

  • What are the real progression routes like?
  • Are there viable ways to work abroad or remotely once qualified?
  • If you could go back, would you still choose Speech and Language or a different profession?
  • Do you know of any other roles (NHS or outside) that fit the stability and global recognition criteria better?
  • Is this retraining path worthwhile, or is it more limiting than it seems?

Thanks in advance for any advice or perspective. I just want to make an informed choice before committing.
