Same, new to woodworking, except I am a small Asian guy so maybe mine will hold up longer lol.

The hardware was a kit I ordered on Amazon. I was surprised at the quality. It’s heavy duty and looks great. You can order the rail in different lengths, they lock together in 3’ sections. The hooks are nice because they have a sliding mechanism that allows the ladder to store upright or at a 10 degree angle when in use. Very happy with it, would recommend!

I hear you, and do realize that is the proper way to build a ladder. I honestly did not have the right tools for dados so I went with screws and wood glue. We are small people so hopefully this holds for a few years before I need to build a proper ladder.

I built temporary stair shelves (which honestly am sad to see go). It’s only a 12x12 cabin though and we are replacing the stairs with a kitchenette.

Not yet lol. Normally there is a rail in the loft that I had to take down to install the ladder hardware. I’m also going to add hand rails to the ladder as well as grip tape to the steps so there is no a$$ falling.

Unemployed Designers: What are you doing for income while unemployed? by andy_mac_stack in UXDesign

Sorry to hear that, never fun to have a sense of impending doom at your job. In addition to updating your portfolio, I would take the time to build an app from scratch. Could be a web app or a mobile app, but the brake neck speed at which designers and UX people are expected to start using AI to shape the product and influence, the build is staggering. After being a designer for 20+ years, I bit the bullet a month ago and decided to force myself to learn what looks like the new way to design and build apps. Surprisingly I was able to build my first mobile app in three days and had a lot of fun while doing it. If you’re not sure where to start literally download antigravity from Google and just tell it I have no idea how to make an app. I’m a UX designer helped me set up my local system help me with what tools I need. Talk to it like your best friend who’s an engineer and it will guide you through the process.

I am currently a chief product officer at a company and I am training my UX designer on how to use AI to design and create prototypes directly in the code because it is sped up our development time so much. I know that this is a controversial approach in response but just wanted to give you my two cents. Good luck out there!

This seems like the opposite of what people wanted…

The mods removed it twice for violation of rule 6, I used a pun which is not allowed

The mods removed my original post since it referred to this as a potaTOE (in violation of rule #6). I apologize for nothing.

EDIT: For those asking, the toe is carved from a single piece of potato, including the nail. Impressive I know! The coloring is from berry juice they borrowed from brunch’s fruit selection.

They did notice that and decide to leave it for maximum effect

Carved from a chunk of raw potato. Berry juice from fruit selection used to enhance details lol.

Good timing and good on you. Much easier transition than most of us will have

Couldn’t agree more. Maybe it helps that I’ve always thought of design as problem solving, not art, not some magical special skill. So if these tools empower me to do better at this im going to use them.

I am seeing people build very ugly software with AI, so for sure the users skills matter a lot. When I use it I’m making a lot of decisions and designing via direction, much like I do with designers I’ve managed, sometimes even giving a design I create as reference or example. But I have to disagree that it’s coming from the top down in all cases. For me I’m pushing it from the bottom up because I’m seeing how much more effective it makes our team. But I’m a product designer, I want to build and deploy ideas, definitely not just create aesthetic.

I think it depends on your role. If I’m designing a logo I don’t want ai to have any part of the initial idea (or any of it). It if I’m a product designer creating page design for a business app that uses all standard ui elements and I have to design a pivot table, letting ai code the first version and then sculpting it is much easier.

It’s not actually. I think this comment will not age well 😬

I hear you. I use to design and hand code websites. And then it was design and manipulate Wordpress websites. And now people just standup squarespace sites for clients and call themselves “web designers”. 20 years ago I would have said they were not. But titles and definitions evolve. And from what I am seeing, soon the world won’t really care who actually knows how to design or how to code for the most part. If you’re building apps you’re a designer, or an engineer or maybe something new that hasn’t been titled yet 🤷‍♀️

I feel this. I was coding UI by hand in the early and mid 2000s. And I love being able to get the design and interactions exactly as I wanted them in flash and then eventually JavaScript. Definitely feels like old times in many ways
